The New Bronze "Kiss" is Returning to San Diego

The Kiss

Last March, I posted that this version of the " The Kiss" above , a sculpture designed by Seward Johnson Jr. was being removed from the Embarcadero area next to the Midway Museum. It was on loan and had been in place for several years and was showing a lot of signs of needing refurbishing. When it was to be removed , it was voted that it should be replaced with a permanent rendition that would cost about a million dollars and the funds would be raised by local donors.  A new painted Bronze version would replace it once the $1,000,000 of funds was raised.

The money was raised by enthusiastic donors and the replacement was ordered. The Bronze is now finished and is on its way from Trenton New jersey to San Diego as a permanent icon of the famous sculpture inspired by the photo taken in Times Square the day the end of WWII was announced.

It was announced in our local news that the newly cast bronze will be installed on Valentines Day with a public unveiling ceremony the following Saturday, Feb. 16th. As part of this special event and in the spirit of the "Kiss ", couples who were married during the war will have a chance to renew their vows followed by a  Spirit of '45 community celebration on the Navy Pier that sits next store to where the statue will reside.

When the new statue is in place, I will be posting a new photograph of the permanent painted bronze version.

Hi Jim, Me too. I haven't been down to the Embarcadero in almost 6 weeks and it will be fun to get some fresh new photos of all the activity there.

Hi Alexandra, When the city announced the statue was being returned as it was on loan for the last five years, many people were so disappointed that a group of citizens got together and decided to replace the statue on loan with a permanent version that would remain and become an icon here in San Diego.

I'm fascinated by history, history of almost any location.  This ICON represents one of the most important times in the history of the U.S., World War II.

This is, IMO, important.

Make sure to park it over a city storm drain for the proper affect. Oh, that was Marilyn M, different statute. Sorry (Smile).

William, I recall a couple of years ago when the lady in the famous photo was interviewed. A great story and point in time signifying the end of WWII. Looking forward to the photo of the permanent bronze sculpture on Valentines Day.

William, great photo.  I'm glad to hear that there will be a bronze, permanent version of "The Kiss."  It does justice to those who were a part of WWII.  My dad is a Marine from WWII.  He faught in the front lines of the Pacific. Semper Fi.

Hi Valerie, I think this will be a great remembrance, and San Diego will a wonderful location for the permanent statue. I understand there are several other cities that have the statue like we had here but I don't know if any of those cities have a permanent version. Perhaps the artist himself knows the answer. I will look him up and see if there is anything written about his statues.

Hi Lenn, I couldn't agree more. I think our history needs to celebrated lest we as a nation forget how the events shaped what we have become as a nation. This statue will be very near our "Walk of the Greatest Generation". Seems fitting that it be there.

William  There is no doubt you live in a city where citizen support puts projects like this "over the top"

William,

I've always liked that photograph and the statute itself is something special.  I look forward to seeing your photographs of the the bronze version.  I like the city's  gesture of installing it on Valentines Day.

William, the best communities pull together for things like this and one of my favorite lines in your post is this...The money was raised by enthusiastic donors... the bronze is going to be something and I'll bet this turns out to be a favorite photo posing place.

William, I recall using this photo of yours as one of those spotlighted when I did a post about your photographic genius. This was and still is one of my favorites--both yours and the original photo taken oh-so-long ago. I think it completely personifies LOVE and passion in every angle, from her lean to the hand she is holding in an excited (and surprised) fist while he braces her with his arm--I just love this captured moment! It is what we all want to achieve in a photo, to speak VOLUMES without a single uttered word!

William - don't want to spoil the party, but the charm. that the photo definitely has, is IMO missing in the sculpture. I am not really fond of painted bronze.

Not to argue with all great sentiments, but hardly a work of art.
