Sugar LipsStats from the horse's mouth:

  • The average Google query now consists of 4 words
  • 14% of Google click come from paid search - 86% from organic
  • 25% of Google's user queries are unique*

Hmmm, gives long-tail keywords new value.

How do you optimize for long-tail?

Content.

This may seem counter to my previous posts, but it's not. Content is not the be-all and end-all (i.e. King) of SEO, but it does have an important place in search engine optimization.

It all works together...don't ignore one facet of optimization for another. Onsite, offsite, off we go...

Written while listening to So What'cha Want by the Beastie Boys. This office rocks!

*Update: Brian from Beu Blog contacted me to let me know about this additional info from Matt Cutts:

...if you had queries from the last month or so, 20-25% of queries the next day would be new/unique. It also depends a little bit about whether you’re defining it only as web queries, or all queries to Google (e.g. blog search, book search, patent search, etc.).”

Kay, the stats don't surprise me.  I have started using the long tail myself when I search for different things.  There is so much to try and keep track of.

There ceratinly is a lot to be learned from studying the long-tail statistics from one's site to get the best idea of what people are searching for - and delivering what they want!

Kay: Thanks for the stats. I seo on a minimum of 4 words. I review my google analytics once a week to find out what real estate terms people are searching on to find my website.

I have a meter on my outside blog that shows me the keyword searches that lead consumers there.  It has never been the usual keywords that I see other agents in my area fight over.  Quite frankly I learned when I was in the technology industy that the end user never did what we thought they would.

Kay, content is indeed king - and we need to remember consistency as well - if you stop blogging about a neighborhood, your rankings will go down as fast as they went up.

Kay - Interesting statistic about organic V.S paid. I suspected the percentages what be about that.

SEO Diva - My Google tail is so long...LOL. Seriously though, while going through my Google Analytics it was amazing to see how many people found me with long tail searches.

Steve - In an office of twenty-somethings, we have some rockin' music (and sometimes I need earphones)!

Marchel - Often detailed search terms are the only way to get through the Internet noise to find what you want

Deborah - You're right - use those long-tail statistics to fine-tune your content.

Jill - That's the way to do it; be sure to utilize the best of them in your content.

Cindy - Isn't that the truth!

Sharon - Blogging is a good way to get ahold of the long-tail terms and be found for them.

Bill - Organic is actually higher than what has been reported in some venues. I was a little surprised.

Ryan - Dude, you are always good for a laugh! Long-tail visitors are usually the ones who are looking for exactly what you offer - that's what's so cool about it.

Kay - I think that is what I am here for. Oh... and helping myself to a little Google Juice. Mmm... it tastes so good.

Kay - This confirms what I've been seeing, thanks for the information.
