Direct Mail Is Like Exercise - You Don't Have To Start Big - Just Start!

Happy to be getting a lot of mileage out of one post I did on direct mail, then Barbara Todaro is giving direct mailing even more mileage!  If you follow her posts, you've read about direct mail - it's easy to follow her advice.  I have to admit - I have a big heart for Barbara - she is a good person, a good example, and from personal experience - really cares about alot of people and wants to help others succeed!

It took me a while to get moving on Barbara's advice though - getting the plan together always came to a stop because of the money and the uncertainty of it all.  But, then one day, while out on a run, I thought to myself, if I just look at direct mailings like I do exercising - you don't always see the results right away - but if you stick with it - it will pay off - then it will work.  With 35 some years of running, swimming, riding a bike under my belt - it has paid off in many ways.

The thing about exercise is, you don't have to start big - you just have to start.  Invest in a good pair of running shoes, bike or whatever it is you want to do - write down when you want and can do it every week - and then do it.  To this day, I still write down on my daily TO DO list, "exercise".  Just start - start with a mile, and go from there and before you know it - it will pay off.

Same with direct mail, you don't have to start big - just start.  My first mailing - small - 200 postcards; my second the following week, 500.  I had to keep it within my budget.  Find a good postcard company with reasonable mailing fees, pick your market and start!

Is it that easy?  Well, direct mailing is a lot easier than starting an exercise program - that's all I can say!  You have nothing to lose by getting your name out there. I had nothing to lose, and got lucky - I did get a call, with a listing appointment set, and will be showing homes to a Buyer this weekend with my first mailing.

What's most important to remember?  With exercise and direct mail - don't give up and be patient.  If you stop either - the pay off ends at that moment.  With both, the reward comes - just start, stick with it and don't give up - even if you don't see results right away - just be patient!

Love Being Realtor® in the Nashville TN Area!

It is more trouble and more tedious, but I find that letters sent in window envelopes get better results.

I would love a gorgeous postcard that would be refrigerator worthy to pop under a magnet! So many postcards are so forgettable and get pitched immediately.

Hi Gab.... well, if I were not a direct mail marketing person, this post would certainly motivate me to get started.... hope we can hear more great results from you.... you're the best.

Gab:  I have always done it & stopped when the market downturned. I am now starting again & started to do the most painless form from the USPS called Every Door Direct Mail.  It's pretty easy & all you do is select where you want the postperson to take your mailers.  You drop it off & voila - they get delivered.  I used to do a complicated CASS program which is another way to do it but some people said it's too complicated.

It is exactly like exercising - you will see the great benefits about 30 days down the road!

I have started doing direct mail campaigns as well. Consistency is the key to direct mailings.

Gabrielle~ You are absolutely right! I've got a plan for a direct mail campaign, but I'm struggling getting the proof done. I need to light a flame under a certain someone!

Nice analogy, by the way. <suggested>

Direct mail gets results!  Period!  People still like to hold something in their hand, although they still see things of interest online.

As you may know, in my past life, I created countywide recycling programs.  Yes, I have done several Dumpster dives and waste stream audits.  I have seen so many unopened advertisements, I often question the money spent.

If done right and targeted correctly, as you point out, they can be gold!

Gabrielle, I think you are right - it's hard to start the exercise and direct mail - but once you start, no looking back. Let me start something soon...before it's too late.
