Uncle Pete

By

My Uncle Pete Delaurenti was the kind of guy every kid would love to have as an uncle. A tad eccentric, self-taught, creative, a musician, and almost always cheerful with a warm smile, he was one of the family’s entrepreneurs. Delaurenti Music Store was in the front half of his home on Rainier Avenue in downtown Renton when I was growing up.

Pete Delaurenti and the Accordion Club of Renton. Picnic at Liberty Park on August 22, 1936.

Always the promoter and marketer, Pete went to great efforts to promote the accordion and those who played them. These pictures were taken at Liberty Park on August 22nd in 1936 (maybe 1937). That’s Uncle Pete upfront with his baton.

This was a special day, a picnic to celebrate the Accordion Club of Renton. That’s my dad in the back row in the middle, he would be have just turned 15 or 16.

I often think if he were around today, he’d have been all over social media! I love the Americana and the boat float made from a decorated truck.

That's dad in the back of the float on the right. Besides the music store and the Accordion Club of Renton, Uncle Pete was the photo finish photographer at Longacres Race Track for many years. He was also an early movie enthusiast and made travel films that aired on local television in the 1950's.

I'm having a blast going through an old trunk full of these wonderful old family photos. I only wish I would have discovered them many years ago. There's so many questions I'd love to ask.

Your Uncle really did understand marketing.  It's really just making your product stand out from the next.  I bet a lot of kids who would never take accordion lessons changed their mind with that boat.

Liz: I think my Uncle got almost every kid in town then... and when they became parents their kids took accordion lessons from my Dad! :O)

Rene what a fun post!  Your Uncle surely was the Pied Piper!  And I bet your Dad would be all over social media!

Hi Rene, Old pictures are almost as good as a time machine.  Being an accordion enthusiast, did he hang out with Stan Boreson?

Hi Dan... Actually both my Uncle Pete and my dad knew Stan Boreson quite well. Stan wasn't a frequent visitor but he did stop by our home on occasion. He also dropped in to see my dad play once in a while, I saw him a few times when I was old enough to be in the club. Also, when I was 20 - 22, going to Green River Community College, I taught guitar lessons at the Stan Boreson Music Store in Enumclaw (1970 - 72).

Those wonderful photos are a great testiment to delightful times with your special uncle, Rene'.  I had a couple uncles that I loved dearly, but they weren't especially eccentric like your's.  I think eccentricity is just one step away from magical:-)

Thanks Myrl... That's a wonderful way to put it and the way I hold it, right up there next too magical! Not like he was weird or anything. At least not the world that I grew up in. He, like several members of that former generation that came through the Great Depression were resourceful, creative, and there was never a  reason not to be whatever you wanted to be. When you're a kid, that's just so dang attractive!

Rene, The stories would have come to life if you had the opportunity to ask. I think you are doing a great job filling in the pieces.

Debbie, you are so sweet. I ask, why did it take me so long to realize how long my roots went back? I always consider myself as someone who just recently showed up!

You had me with your description of your Uncle Pete... 'almost always cheerful with a warm smile.'  It seems someone else we know may have inherited Uncle Pete's disposition ;-)  A very lovely post Rene!

Hi Rene, Great older black and white photos and I really like the boat float. Your uncle was a smart man and I am sure he did quite well without the social media on the internet. A real pioneer to remind us that some of the older methods still work.

Mel... Thanks! I'm an avid fan of Henry Miller... His by line of sorts was, "Alway's Merry, Alway's Bright!" I identify with that!

Hi Kristin... You get it so exactly... Media and Marketing have always been social and they work!
