What’s Happening in Delray Beach? Our Monthly WCR Meeting was Full of Information!
Do you have a Women’s Council of Realtorsin your area? If you do and you aren’t a member I encourage you to visit them and consider joining.
I’ve been an Affiliate of the WCR for several years and each meeting is a learning experience. Today’s meeting was held at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach. (more on that later) Today’s guest speaker was Woodie McDuffie, former Mayor of Delray Beach.
It’s hard to believe but Mr. McDuffie was actually born in Delray Beach. You don’t often find Florida natives in Florida!
So what’s happening in Delray Beach?
1. Attract businesses to Delray Beach
As Mr. McDuffie pointed out most of his Delray Beach classmates are no longer in the area. When they graduated there were no jobs to keep them here. So our city fathers have placed a great deal of importance on bringing businesses to Delray so that our children will not have to leave the area.
One issue has been finding Class A office space available within Delray proper. As late as 2 years ago there was zero Class A office space available. With the recent purchase of Atlantic Plaza by the Intracoastal, Delray will add 80,000 sq ft of Class A office space.
2. Bringing parity to underserved school children.
This is exciting! Working with Florida Power & Light and Palm Beach State University, refurbished PC’s will be given to children AND certain areas of the city that will have free wi-fi service for these children so that they will be able to do the research that our children are able to do in their own homes.
3. The Campaign for Grade Level Reading-
It was determined that 55% of our Kindergarten to 3rd graders were not at Grade Level Reading. The city will be focusing on increasing school attendance; getting the kids prepared for school; and summer learning so that children don’t lose the momentum of learning.
And thank you to Steve Fenton of Handyman Matters who sponsored this month’s meeting. Steve has been an ardent supporter of the Women’s Council of Realtors.
Can’t wait til next month’s meeting!
