How well do your neighbors know you?

This morning after I was well into my jog, I realized I had forgotten to bring any identification with me.  I typically throw some sort of ID in my pocket before I leave; usually just a business card.  I figure as long as it has my name and phone number on it, it would be easy enough for someone to determine where I live if something were to happen to me while I was getting my exercise.

ID tagMy first thought when I realized my ID was missing was that perhaps I should go back home to retrieve it, but I wasn’t feeling that energetic, so I decided to just finish without it.  But then I started thinking, well, what if something was to happen to me?  Do my neighbors know me well enough to know who I am?  Would I just be a Jane Doe until a family member realized I hadn’t returned home?

I moved into a new county, town and neighborhood a year and a half ago, and I’ve made a point to meet my nearby neighbors.  I love the feel of a community; a place where you can walk down the street and talk to people you know.  I wanted to feel that sense of belonging.  And luckily, I have been able to make friends with several of the people in the homes near mine.  And a few weeks ago in a local grocery store, I was introduced to another neighbor, and she said, “Hey, I know you!  I see you running in the mornings!”  So I do know some of my neighbors, and they know me.

But when I go out on my morning jog, I pick my route based on my mood.  Sometimes it’s a 2 mile quick run, and sometimes 4.  I run by a lot of homes on many different streets.  I do not know who lives in most of those homes.  While I wave and say good morning to a lot of people, I don’t personally know them and they don’t know me.

So what’s the bottom line?

I need to get to know a lot more of my neighbors, because neighborhoods can be as big or small as you want them to be, and I want mine to be huge.   I don’t want to ever be a Jane Doe.  Until then, however, I need to remember to carry ID with me from now on, since as I've realized, most of my neighbors have no idea who I am.

I live in a town of about 8 thousand. If I don't know their name, I probably either know where they work or where they live. Everyone here knows I am the Realtor that drives the only 1960 Corvette in town and always tips with $2 dollar bills.

It is good to know our neighbors. In our world socializing is changing. I think eyeball to eyeball socialization is best for our local areas

Rob - Well that's GREAT!  You're all set.

Doug - Socialization seems to be done mostly via devices now.  I love the "real" socializing.

Kat, good point.  There are times, I hate to say, that I have gone to walk the beach with no ID.  I guess after 24 hours they could notice my car in the parking lot and run the plates.  I have subscribed to your blog. :)

Chris/Dick - Thank you for subscribing!!!  Yes, eventually, they'd figure out who we were, but that sounds a bit messy!!

Kat, your story is so inspiring and it's good to know your neighbors.... I probably watch too many of those Dumb Detective Movies so please be careful out their some of those neighbors could be perverts.
I think you have a great idea of having some sort of ID on your person at all times. Be safe.... I'm off to meet the neighbors.

Bob - yes, I agree about the need to be careful!  I wouldn't just go up to a door and knock if I was alone, so I'll have to come up with some other ways to meet them!

I live in a big acreage community and the answer is not nearly well enough and without the help of my trusty golden retriever Jasmine I probably wouldn't know any at all.  So that's my next plan of attack here.

Scott - Ha, that's funny about Jasmine, since my neighbors definitely recognize our Husky Halo, just not me!!!  Of course Halo wears her name tag at all times.

Kat - I spent years traveling in a job and I was never around. I did not even know my next door neighbors! I think I am doing better now, but you have inspired me to redouble my efforts. And this is me wagging my finger at you...Remember to always have ID on you and a quarter to call home!

Peter - haha, a quarter wouldn't be much help with no phone booths!  But I do agree, I should always remember my ID!!!  Thanks for stopping by.

Kat -- a very good post --- I live in a condominum complex and I've been embarrassed by not recognizing someone who lived on my floor.   It reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where Jerry didn't recognize one of his very close neighbors.

Good point Kat! I have been living in my community for years and there are still some of them that I just recognize by their vehicles. Things have sure changed from back in the day that everybody knew everybody.

Fred - I think that's because we do so much on-line socializing that neighborhood barbeques and hanging out on the stoops just isn't the norm.  Thanks for stopping by!
