Pampered Birdlife Along the American River

By
Real Estate Agent

Birdlife along the American River Parkway is sometimes a pampered bunch.  Many of the gulls leave their coastal environment and hunker down here in the Sacramento Valley, when the Salmon are traveling upstream for the spawn.  I live near the stretch of the American River the Salmon journey while completing their great circle of life.  Pacific Salmon perish after the spawn.  This sad ending for the fish provides great opportunity for the birds.  They grow fat, lazy and complacent in the late autumn and early winter weeks.

I found this flock sun bathing in temps near 70 degrees today.  There resting place is a shallow sand bar in an area of the river between Hagan Community park in Rancho Cordova, and Ancil Hoffman park, located on the opposite river bank in Carmichael.

These photos were taken with my little point and shoot camera. Quality isn’t the best.  The Canadian Goose was not zoomed in.  He was literally at my feet and was too lazy to move out of any imagined fear it may have had.

Myrl:  What a great thing for you to live so close to so much of Mother Nature's beauty.  Her creatures are just so regal in their appearance... feathers and all.  Although all of the pictures are wonderful, the one of the Canadian Goose is just... wow.

I am originally from the NorthEastern Ohio area, and when I make the trip back a few times each year... I can depend on seeing many of these Canadian Geese just about wherever I go.  For some reason, many of the "locals" when these geese, and the little "presents" they leave, would go away.  Me... I can still appreciate the beauty.

Hi Myrl, Picking up on John's comment, I would say " Ornithological Species of Idential Plummage tend to congregate in closer proximity. Love the photos.

Karen - I fully understand what you are saying about the Canadian Geese and their little "presents."  We have so many of them in our local parks, that having a picnic on the ground would be totally out of the question.  Somehow, a balance needs to be struck, but I have no idea how to achieve that.

John - Yes, they do, tsk, tsk!

Joan - I have been amazed that I have lived near this stretch of the American River for 43 years.  Yet, it wasn't until I bought a bicycle and could access the American River Parkway as readily, that I became as familiar with what had been in my own backyard.  It is truly amazing!

William - Yes, they certainly do!  I sometimes am amazed by how much to themselves they keep!

Hi Myrl, Those birds have it great in 70 degree weather with the sun!  That Canadian Geese is not afraid of humans....the ones around here run for cover or attack!

Great photos!

Gloria
