There are many ways to lead people, the best way predicts Machiavelli in The Prince, is to lead by example, and be loved and respected. Of course, too Machiavelli is quick to note that if that does not work the second best way is to lead by fear; feared and respected. I propose you learn how to lead by example and to be loved and respected and try to continue that method, as it is best for all concerned. Now then, just so you know what we are talking about here let me recommend a couple of books to you:

"Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Practice and Principles"

by Peter Drucker - 1985.

Participating in the entrepreneurial economy means you must understand what it is and how it works and Mr. Drucker starts out by explaining it in the introduction before he even starts the book. Fostering innovation, understanding the animal and using this knowledge to produce constant and continual creativity in business is the first section and next he explains entrepreneurship in action and how practicing these techniques and strategizing can produce winning products and services and methods for marketing them.

What an interesting book to read again now that we have experienced another two decades of constant innovations. Amazing that some of these strategies seem so obvious now and it is equally as interesting that even with all the modern communication, that the underlining foundations of innovation creation are similar.

Good book

"Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun"

by Wess Roberts, PhD. - 1987.

The book is a quick history of who Attila the Hun was and how he commanded respect and leadership in his time. The book takes some of these strategies and puts them into a modern context. How one must desire to lead, honor customs, pick your enemies wisely, responsibilities of leaders, decisiveness, delegating, negotiation, discretion, and leaving with dignity.

Despite the current accepted methods of "feel good leadership" one thing should be noted and that is that leading by fear, strength, honor and conviction also works. There are times no matter what any Neo-Feel Good psychologist tells you, that such methods would be wise to employ. Surely, not a topic that will make you many friends discussing, but the reality is it works.

Now then after you re-read The Prince by Machiavelli, then go pick up each of these other books and do a little soul searching. After that, you will be ready for your future leadership position in the Real Estate Community. Oh, and subscribe to this blog for your on-going education. (no you won't get credit, but you will be a better man for it).

7 Comments on Lead By Example or Lead By Fear - In Real Estate You Are Going to Have to Choose Sometime

Lance, good post, thanks for the information, I will have to read the books that you mentioned.  I would also suggest Principle Centered Leadership by Stephen R Covey in the lead by example category.

Vikie,

Whereas, you might think that your comment here is a positive thing, I see it as entirely something else. Your website tells me that you provide "diligent effort" and work hard for your clients? But, you come to my blog and post:

"Thanks for this valuable post."

And exactly, what am I to say to that? What am I suppose to think? I mean, what does it mean? You have purposely come to my blog and posted this comment, that looks more like graffiti to me. And I suppose you got your 25 pts? Big whoopy skippy? Look here is the deal, I am not interested in drive-by comments here. This is not some joke to me. If you are going to come here fine, you want to read and learn, do it, smart thinking, but if all you are going to do is post trash, then think twice, if all you want out of life is your little 25 brownie points then take your little games elsewhere, I am not impressed at all. And if you keep doing this, I am going to delete your comments, take away your 25 pts and then you will find out how silly these games are. Knock it off, this is the second posted meaningless comment you have put on my blog tonight. Enough is enough. - Lance

In case she comes back to delete her commets here, for the record here it is:

Thanks for this valuable post.

Lance,

I see Vicky got a tongue lashing for a less than thoughtful comment. I hope I didn't offend you with mine.

A bit of background.

I took a blog break in January and came back a few days ago. I managed to catch a couple of your posts and wanted to contribute. Then...distraction. Never got around to it.

So, I perused the Rain this evening and ran into this post. (Half baked in a tired sense I might add). And I remembered I wanted to acknowledge my appreciation for your overall style...and did it in Vicki fashion.

Hope you take no offence, none meant by it.

Best to you,

Michael

Michael,

Its all good. This was not the first incident from that person, there was another one, tonight actually. It just gets old. I think if you watch folks who do this ALL the time, you will find they go from blog to blog, 10 in a row and the click out and leave, just to get the points. I find that unfortunate. I know that people go to blogs and read them, then feel they are owed their points for reading or for their troubles to be bothered, after clicking on a junk post, that has a seductive title. I have been upset before and posted a one sentence comment, but in the end it does nothing for the conversation, it defeats the purpose and it becomes a giant joke. I do not believe that is what Active Rain is about, I have even tried to prevent people from posting a drive-by post, by dissallowing comments, figuring that they will never come back again, if their only purpose is to collect a 25 pt stipend.
