To Point! or Not to Point! a "Catch 22"

I just finished reading Mary McKnight's blog and found it very interesting, she writes great articles that should interest everyone on AR. But it stimulated some thoughts,....Maybe its a "Catch 22" scenario?

If having multiple domains pointing at one site is "not recommended"?  Is it not so much a case of not pointing the sites to the one, but more not pointing them all towards the site in a short time frame? Its my understanding that Google penalizes your site for having multiple sites, point to one site, in a short period of time?  If thats the case, how frequently should you add another pointed site?

Its kind of a "catch 22", scenario? If you have multiple domains and you redirect them to your main site, which should appear as if you have multiple inbound links, which is what is suggested to all of us to help our ranking and our positioning, and our seo.  But in reality you are penalizing yourself, if its accomplished too quickly?

So my questions:

1) How frequently can you add these inbound links?(Multiple Domains you own)

2) How frequently should you add other inbound links to your site if Google penalizes you for adding too many links too quickly?(Outside Domains like Real Estate Directories or Affiliates)

From a personal perspective I think I've made a huge mistake! I purchased 16 Domains names in one day and had them all pointed and redirected to my main website within a day. Excitement and enthusiasm got the better of me! That should have put me in the sandbox! I know that my site has no page rank according to Google's page rank indicator on my tool bar.

I hope this blog gets some attention and the Active Rain Guru's and entrusted knowlegeable SEO experts could please give the rest of us some additional information on this point.

I wish I could help with an answer, but this is the first time I've heard you're not supposed to to that, too. I'll have to ask around.

Martin,

Good question.....I too do not know, however I will follow your post here to see what good answers you get.

I have not been as aggressive as you and now will hold off a bit to be sure.

Martin - I don't know the answer. I have purchased lots of URL's and have them pointing to one of six or seven web sites. I can not believe that multiple urls is a bad thing. I am not sure that there is space in all those tubes that make up the interweb for having a website attached to every url. Senator Steven's would just hit the roof if the dang interweb got constipated with that many websites. Just think of all the big pictures that would be wasting space, slowing everyone down.

But I will wait to hear from those that understand the limits and workings of the web. I admit, I have not yet grasped why - If everyone turns their t.v. to the same station, no one runs out of pictures. Some things are just outside my understanding.

I am sure that many of us have been over pointed! I can not help but wonder if we are not getting to critical of our attempts at SEO. Sometime I feel like I am trying to fly a plane and this is the first time I have ever seen the cockpit...

John, thanks for stopping by, I appreciate the comment.

Charles, Pretty good analogy except this doesn't have the same repurcussions, but it could certainl hurt your SEO.

I'd think you would chose not to point (redirect) but to put up a small profile home page with a link to your main site.

Wouldn't the search engines rather see a site with a link than a domain name pointed to another domain name?

Does a domain name pointed to your main domain name really count as an inbound link?  I don't think so.

Thanks for dropping in and commenting Erby, I would think an obviously different site pointed at a domain would be good, I think a domain link from a counterpart/forwarded or hidddomain may be bad?

Having a profile page on one site and linking that site to your own should be fine. But I'm not the expert.
