On this day in 1903, toy store owner and inventor Morris Michtom places two stuffed bears in his shop window, advertising them as "Teddy Bears." Mr. Michtom had earlier petitioned President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt for permission to use his nickname. The president agreed and before long, other toy manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon, and started making copies of Mr. Michtom's stuffed bears. The lovable bears soon became a national childhood keepsake and instituition.

After two decades of trying, stock car racing great Dale Earnhardt finally wins his first Daytona 500. This is NASCAR'S premier event. The year was 1998.
