Is That Daylight That I See Shining Through?

It Doesn’t Look Watertight.

Okay, so I’m looking at the inside of an attached storage area on the backside of a building checking for signs of water damage. There were many areas that you could actually see daylight shining through the walls. As a general rule, if you can see daylight, water can also make its way through too.

Many of the areas where we saw daylight had signs of water intrusion. Before it gets too bad, correcting these areas should be a high priority. If you do not know what to look for, consider contacting a qualified dry rot repair contractor.

I have watched home inspecters do this and point out to new buyers.  Sure common sense measure of what you are dealing with.

Definitely important to have things watertight.  Dry rot can be a really bad situation and ruin a home.  Excellent advice. :)

Stan - This sort of thing can really bring the concept of non-waterproof into proper perspective.

Oh yeah, that does not look good at all.  At least it's easy to spot the problem so you can fix it.

Good morning Tom. A really good post about a really important concern, and as you say, if you need to learn more...find a contractor who knows.

It seems to me that if there's no light to show the way, the water won't know which way to go.  I say live and let live, AD Model Man.

Worst case, caulk it.  Duct tape it.  Or, even better, WD-40 so the water slides in more easily.
