Santa Claus isn't just for Christmas

By

Hello everyone-Here it is just past Valentines Day and everybody has put thoughts of Santa Claus behind them until December. Well I am excited about Santa Claus coming. Now the Santa Claus I am excited about is red and wht just like Santa Claus's suit but there is no black boots in my Santa Claus and I don't have to wait til December. Probably more like April.

Now my Santa Claus isn't red/wht to start out with think more like a caterpillar who becomes a beautiful butterfly. So what does my Santa Claus look like and how is it different from the jolly fellow that flies around the world delivering presents to good little boys and girls.

This is the Santa Claus I am looking forward to receiving and the excitement of the unopened gift of beauty that it will produce.

Santa Claus Dinnerplate Dahlia

Enormous and colorful flowers are 8-10" or more in diameter. They grow to reach 4-5 ft. tall and 4-5 wide.  They come in clumps and I ordered 2 of them as well as 6 others of different colors.  They bloom from Summer til Fall. You dig them up in the Fall in zones 3-7. I live in 7.

Can't wait til Santa Claus comes to town. I will be more excited than a kid at Christmas.

Hi Sharon,

I love it and it does look like Santa Claus. Great post and I bet it will attract the hummingbirds too. Have a nice holiday tomorrow.

Kristin-That it does and this Santa Claus is around much longer than the man in the suit. I think hummers like dahlias if I remember right from last year.

Sharon, you're such a tease! Bringing us Christmas in April....(my favorite holiday in my birthday month--how could I be any happier??!)

I absolutely LOVE dahlias. There was a dahlia farm close to where I lived " in town" many years ago. They allowed you to pick your own, and you could get something like 8 or 12 stems for some ridiculously low price. The choices were ENDLESS. I ALWAYS have fresh flowers in my home--even out here in winter--and I miss those days of parading through those fields trying to figure out which ones I wanted.

The sun isn't enough for dahlias to grow out here. Guess I'll have to live vicariously through you.

You had me at Santa Claus - ha ha. What a gorgeous Dahlia - I though of you recently as I noticed a few of the spring flowers starting to appear - I feel such a connection to fellow gardeners.

Gayle-Me a tease. I plead the 5th. LOL  I got my first real appreciation of them last year when I planted 6 of them. I couldn't get over how big they got and lasted so long. I will make sure I take lots of pics. This one is one of 10 I ordered so it should be colorful.

Toni-I got my thru Breck's

Sharon-I am indeed and I hadn't heard of it before but when I saw them in the catalog I had to get them.

Debb-Good to see you again. Hope you are doing well. It is gorgeous indeed and it will be a show stopping yard I think with these.

We always enjoy photographing dahlias.  They are great for the garden because they bloom for a long time.

Wow, that is a huge and beautiful bloom!

I prefer gardening that doesn't require digging up the plants, since I forget to do it. Glad others do it and provide pictures!

Roy-They are so many varieties too so always a different flower photo op.

Than-Dahlias are the only thing in my garden that I dig up and the showcase of color make it worth it. Plus it is in a raised bed so it makes digging it up much easier.
