Washington’s Birthday or President’s Day, Celebrate Your Way.

Lincoln PennyWhen I was in elementary school, we celebrated two of our United States Presidents Birthdays in February. On February 12, we studied and celebrated Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, the twelfth President of the United States. We talked about the fact he was born in a log cabin, came from humble beginnings, studied law and wanted the best for our country. He was President during the Civil War and wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. He helped reshape our country. We were given a Lincoln head penny to help remember his day. This was celebrated as a public holiday and some people even got off from work. We did not get this day off from school but it was still fun learning about him. He always looked so burdened and worried in his photos and paintings.

Then on February 22, we recognized George Washington’s Birthday. He was an even more important individual we were told, because he was the First President of the United States. We were taught that he was an honest person with integrity. He was held up as an individual that would not lie even when he had destroyed his father’s cherry tree. As the story went, he wasn’t even punished because he told the truth. We liked that part. We did not go to school on his birthday because it was a Cherry TreeFederal holiday but studied about it either the day before or after. This made him really special because we got a day off from school.

In 1968, Congress took it upon themselves to make three national holidays fall on Mondays thus creating three day weekends for workers. Washington’s Birthday was one of the three. In went into effect in 1971. So the day called George Washington’s Birthday moved to the third Monday in February. Some states including Tennessee did not like the fact that this wasn’t the First President’s actual birthday so they started calling it Presidents Day instead. And it stuck and across the country people called it President’s Day. It was then to recognize all the Presidents but most importantly George Washington, our very First President. So since that time, on the third Monday in February, most Federal, State and Local Government offices are closed. Many other business and schools take this holiday off from work.

Joni, It is President's Day because all the store sales call it that. LOL

Hi Debbie, interestingly enough, we Yankees celebrate President's Day and I was always taught that both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were equally important! But, I must say, the banks were all open up here today!

Hello Debbie,  I think holidays are great because everything go on sale and people save money.  I guess I always miss the holidays for a extra day off, my boss would not like it if I take a holiday day, oh that is ME.

Debbie: This long weekend always sneeks up on me. I'm ready to roll, and the banks and post office is closed. On the other hand, all the real estate offices are open. But then, aren't we always?

John, It has been here too. I just can't seem to get it all done.

Joanna, Your banks were open? You all do things a little different up North. I guess since I was from the south George took priority over Abe.

I forgot it was a holiday. I even forgot my husband had the day off...he has every Monday off during the winter season, so there is no excuse for forgetting this. He had a nice dinner planned. But I didn't forget my listing appointment, another appointment with former clients, where I learned they are looking to move again, and I didn't forget the spring sport meeting at school. So it was a busy day.

In spite if of certain necessities being closed, I made myself available for 3 clients to do their mortgage applications, as they had the day off.

Hi Debbie, I used to remind my children (gently) why we had a day off from the usual. Too often, the real meaning of the day off gets lost. Naturally, I worked too, but it still felt a bit different with the neighborhood kids out of school and the government agencies closed.

Joe, You work when your clients need you just like we do.

Chris, Yes, I guess it shows a little. I was also a real estate trainer for 20 years.

Roy, I love history. So glad I could inspire. Many of the blogs I read, trigger a thought.

Debb, It felt a little different to me too. There were more telephone calls and more unanswered questions because the lenders were closed.

Hi Debbie, as for me I was working all day yesterday as well!  It's is amazing how many people do not remember the origins of some of the holidays like President's day.
