Perhaps it would have made more sense if I had come here in the summer and taken some nice pictures, and maybe I will, but I also believe there is a certain beauty in winter. Perhaps it's because nobody else is around and I'm in a rather contemplative mood. Or maybe because I just happen to be driving by and had my camera handy. This is Roblin Lake, a small inland lake in Prince Edward County. It's very beautiful in the summer, there's a small beach here, and sometimes people come here for a swim, the water's very clean. Usually.
Until 2007, the Salvation Army had a rather large summer camp on the shores of Roblin Lake. Under privileged children from all over Ontario would spend their summers here for over 80 years. While the Salvation Army no longer has a camp here, it's still a popular spot for local kids. It's a great place to swim when the conditions are right. My kids are very familiar with Roblin Lake. There's even a canteen that operates when the demand is there.
Roblin Lake is a self contained lake, there's no rivers or streams running in and out, it relies on the melted snow in the spring and rainfall in the summer to maintain its level. The famous Canadian poet Al Purdy built an A-frame cottage on the shore of Roblin Lake, and this is where he did a great deal of his musings and writing. Efforts are underway to restore this cottage, although I'm scratching my head as to why the cost of this is in the area of a million dollars.
Al Purdy isn't the only person who has been inspired by this pretty lake. There's a softball diamond in the park there where I hit my one-and-only home run ever a few years ago. Not one of those in-the-park types where you scamper around the bases relying on the ineptitude of the fielders, but the kind that sails over the fence. It must be the rarified air of the lake, because that had never happened before and I'm certain it will never happen again. Ahhh, glory days.
There's quite a bit to see and do in the area, as Roblin Lake is a hop, skip and a jump away from Ameliasburgh, so if you're looking for a cottage or a four season home in the area, give me a call, there might be one available. Roblin Lake is in my wheelhouse.
