Is Wallpaper REALLY becoming popular again?

Is Wallpaper REALLY becoming popular again?

Fashions come and go.  Wallpaper is one that I never particularly cared for.   It seems like you either liked the patterns or you didn't.  It either matched the furniture and decor or it didn't.

I read recently that wallpaper MIGHT be making a comeback.

I've disliked wallpaper so much that I apparently have not kept any  pictures with wallpaper in them.  See the table cloth in the picture?  That is a great example of what wallpaper frequently looked like in the early 2000's.

Formal Dining Room

Wallpaper WAS the thing in the early 2000's.   If I recall correctly, by the mid 2000's it was on it's way out.    Granted, I just Googled the question, "Is Wall Paper becoming popular again?"  In 2005, someone suggested it was.  In 2011, someone suggested it was.  In 2012, someone thought it was.  In 2013, someone thought it was?

What do you think?  Is wallpaper REALLY becoming popular again?  Are we going to find wall paper in practically every new home being built?  Can the people with homes built around 2001- 2006 relax and keep the wall paper in their kitchens, breakfast areas, bathrooms and where ever else?

Should potential sellers get rid of their wallpaper before they put their house on the market?

Sincerely,

Sondra Meyer, CPA

I don't think it is happening here in Destin, Fl. The only wallpaper I see is in old not updated homes.

Sondra, I sincerely hope not.  Wall paper trends in and out so it's impossible to stay current with it.  It's hideously expensive and a real pain to get rid of.  I don't think someone getting their house ready to market should ever think about installing wallpaper.  It is highly unlikely the sellers' tastes will be the same as the buyers'.

Sondra, I see some textures being used from time to time but the big flowers and the little country prints I sure hope not.

I really hope this trend isn't coming back around. I hated both types of wallpaper we had in the kitchen I grew up in. I was also the one that had to help take it down the first time. My dad was on his own the second time around. It's so much easier to change a paint color.

Sondra, I CAN'T STAND WALLPAPER. Never have! It goes In and out so often and can really date a place. It's a tough thing to get rid of, too. We ended up using Kilz over some wallpaper so that we didn't have to steam it (because the home was FILLED with it) and it was a simple fix. But it's BEST not having it to deal with at ALL.

I think here in 2013 Sondra, wallpaper is out. Textured walls may be a better choice. Yes dump wallpaper in homes for sale. Me and my buyers joke about non toned down wallpaper like flowery roses.

Hi Sondra, It was in fashion in the 70's and 80"s and only rarely since. Museum papers and unique fabrications are still used but limited.

I certainly hope wallpaper stays where it is...in the past. It seriously dates a house, and most buyers hate it, because there are n infinite variety of colors and styles.

Wallpaper can have an instant effect on buyer's impressions of the home...and not always good...

I see a few of the BIG custom homes with wallpaper in them, but I think they ran out of ideas on what to do in the 6000SF of living space and stuck some color in.

Never understood using paper in the wettest area in a house (bathrooms) and people wondered why it peeled.

Most of the time, it is a good idea to remove wallpaper before offering a home for sale.  There may be exceptions but they are not frequently found.
