Everyone makes mistakes.  We are human - it is a fact of life.  Of course it is always worse - when you are your own boss and it is completely your own fault!  No one to yell at; no one to blame.  So I yelled at myself in the mirror for the past 2 mornings and learned what I will do NEXT time.

Making mistakes stinks and while many of us "pretend" it never happens - it does.  We don't tell people (especially clients) that we could ever make a mistake - but let's face it - it can happen.

So here is my mistake... I know you are waiting to hear....  It's not THAT bad - but none-the-less; I screwed up and probably lost a potential client.

Tuesday; my phone was ringing all day long.  I had shown many properties over the weekend and on Monday; so many agents were doing "follow-up" calls.  I don't mind these - I do them myself when I am following up on showings on my listings.  But they do get old - in a hurry.

So Tuesday afternoon; I was helping a friend move his sofa.  I know... moving furniture is one of those things that agents aren't suppose to do!  But it was just down the hall into another room.  Nothing major.

My phone rings... I glance at it... it is a number ending in ....5500.  Oh - just a business; probably another REALTOR calling -- they can leave a message.

Ten minutes later, I am in the car, heading home after a quick errand.  I check my voicemail...

"Hi James, This is Dr. M???? ?????  My landlord is selling his place and I want to hire you as my Buyer's Agent to help me find a place in (x) neighborhood.  Please call me at 202-xxx-xxxx. Thank you"

WOW.... This was not the call I was expecting at all.  Wonderful - I will call her back as soon as I get to my desk where I can write down all her info and check my calendar.  So as I am driving in DC traffic (OK OK Lesson LEARNED) - I hit "save".

I forget the errand at the store and head right home instead so I can call her back.  I actually DO call people back quickly - unlike some of my colleagues.

I get to my desk; grab my pen and Dial my voicemail.  Then IT HAPPENS >>>>> "You have NO messages."

WHAT?!?!  OH MY... I must have hit "delete" not save!  Oh no !!!!

But wait; I have the number she called from - OK; no problem.  I call that number.  It's a business - I know she is a she and that she said Dr.  What WAS her name?  I am racking my brain as I dial.

The number the call originated from... is a Medical firm.. with LOTS and LOTS of Doctors.  The receptionist tries to help; but has no clue what office the call originated from.

Great Buyer found and LOST all in the course of an hour!

I have hoped she would call me back - or email me.  But no.  She probably thinks; "What a loser" or "He is not very responsive" or "Can't he even answer the phone when I call?"

Lesson learned.  Voice Mail still may answer at times... I do shower everyday; go to the gym and I don't often answer the phone while I am with another client.

However - next time I dial VoiceMail - Pen and paper will be at the ready.

If anyone sees my almost buyer out there - tell her I am sorry and I really am not all that bad.

That is a sad story!  I'm afraid it happens to too many of us.  I tend to leave my cell phone in another room and miss a call now and then.  When I call back, they are no longer there!  But don't get so upset that you tear off that dog's other ear!! : )

James, i did this once before. Now I do not feel so bad about it. At least I know I am not alone. By the way, you have to tell me how you did that sign...

Barbara- She has TWO ears - she just like to perk 1 up and 1 down...

Danny - It is just a Clip Art cartoon that I Photo-shop text onto

Gregory - At least I know she's in good hands.  You know where to send my referral fee.  ;-)

Relax, it was a lesson learned.  We have all made mistakes like that.  But, it makes us better as we all learn from our errors!  Just don't make the same exact mistake twice!  :)

My biggest pet peeve is people screening calls.  Who am I to judge the importance of a call?  If someone is calling me I answer it, if I can.  I never make assumptions even though I generally know why someone is calling.  Like your blog stated you never know when that call is going to bring you business.  Also, I do not want the reputation of being a call screener.  I have asked about how did you like so and so's service? I have heard he doesn't return calls more then once.  Hearing that is enough for me not to do business with the person.  That one time you screen a call bit you. So, I take it lesson learned.

Gee Jimmy - I had a huge sofa in the middle of a hallway!  Thanks for your support.

Hi Jim,

I too am guilty of checking my voicemail on the fly.  I have learned that if I can't write it down, to just hang up so that the next time I pick up my phone, it looks like a new message.  I am hearing impaired so it is very difficult for me to get telephone numbers from voicemails.  So I regularly hang up and dial in again so that an associate can get the call back number for me.  But don't beat yourself up.  Take a deep breath, blow it out and keep going.  The next big buyer will call you TODAY!

James- I feel your pain. This has happened to me as well. I now have a pad and pen in my car and purse at all times!

I DON'T THINK THERE IS A ONE OF US WHO HASN'T HAD THIS HAPPEN.  I GET CALLS TRANSFERRED FROM MY OFFICE SOMETIMES TOO AND ONCE THE CALL IS TRANSFERRED FROM THE OFFICE PHONE IT IS LOST.  I'VE MISSED A FEW OR HAD PEOPLE SAY CALL ME BACK YOUR OFFICE HAS THE NUMBER AND OF COURSE THEY DON'T. IF IT WAS MEANT TO BE FOR YOU, SHE'LL CALL BACK.  DON'T LET THE GUILT EAT AT YOU, EASY TO SAY, I WOULD BE UPSET WITH MYSELF TOO.

Maybe it was a referral and the person will call you back. They initiated the call for a reason. Just remembe to answer your phone next time they call!

James - We learn something new each day in this business and everytime we make a mistake, it tends to cost us money.  That fact tends to add further motivation in learning from the inevitable mistakes we all will make.

Oh, James, that's one we can all relate to!  Say a little prayer to St. Anthony.  He helps find lost things, like prospects!  I'm sorry!

James - been there and done that.  I just hate that when it happens.  A few times I could trace it back some how some way but on occasion no such luck and I lost the customer.
