George Washington's Mount Vernon
The celebration of Presidents' Day and George Washington's Birthday is a very good reminder for all us to plan to visit George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum and Gardens this year. Dolores and I have annual passes and that is what we recommend for you if you live near the area.
If you have not visited Mount Vernon since your school trip when you were too young to really appreciate the history of the area, you will be pleased to see that much has changed. Plan to spend much of the day for your family visit. We like to go there in the morning, beginning in the Ford Orientation Center and first tour the Mansion and the many other historic building. When the flowers are in season, everyone should allocate time to spend in the beautiful gardens.
They have a Food Court but we prefer to have lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn. After lunch, it is time to enjoy the biggest new facility at Mount Vernon, the outstanding Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center. To complete the day, you may wish to visit the Distillery and Gristmill which is 2.7 miles from the estate. You will find the information you need to plan your visit at www.mountvernon.org.
