The Penny Ice Creamery Expands to Pleasure Point, CA
If Pleasure Point did not seem attractive enough, it is now home to the second location of The Penny Ice Creamery! 41st Street is hopping with surf shops, delicious food, and ice cream made from scratch in house.
Penny Ice takes pride in their participation in the third wave of ice cream; in which they mean, “the combination of traditional culinary methods with modern and whimsical flavors to devise truly unique ice cream creations.” This ice cream would not be possible without Kendra and Zach. Kendra was the Executive Pastry Chef at two Micheline star Manresa Restaurant and Zach was directing operations and product development at a San Francisco startup. Their combined efforts have created a business that has the characteristics of Santa Cruz. They have a sustainable business practice that is energy efficient, zero waste, and they employ architects, electricians and other services that reside in Santa Cruz. The organic ingredients come from farms in Northern California like Dirty Girl Farms, Fogline Farm, and Swanton Berry Farm. Penny Ice’s standards are hard to beat!
Another unique characteristic of Penny Ice is that their beginnings stem from President Obama’s Recovery Act Small Business Loan. The dream of making handmade batches of ice cream became a reality with the help of the loan. Penny Ice made a thank you video to the White House. It gained the attention of Joe Biden and he made a response video! Take at look at them.
Since opening in 2010, Penny Ice has been a great success! From the original location on Cedar Street, to a Kiosk on Pacific Ave. and their presence at the Wednesday Farmers Market, they draw in customers from Capitola and Aptos so why not open a location near those ice cream lovers?
I am a fan of their delicious creations and in the past have loved Olive Oil Chocolate Sea Salt, Pluot Sorbet and Strawberry Pink Peppercorn. Penny Ice changes their flavors just about every week; so if you catch any of these flavors, give them a try! But I bet that there is a flavor for your ice cream craving when you drop by there.
The new location in Pleasure Point opened on January 19th and the surrounding community has given Penny Ice a warm welcome. The address is 820 41st Avenue, which is in between the popular sushi restaurant Pink Godzilla and Verve Coffee Roasting.
