Waking Up From a Feng Shui Nightmare!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Move To Realty 0548926 Texas

A couple weeks ago, my office’s owner decided it was a good time to paint a couple of the offices in the building as well as the hallway and the public areas.  At the last moment, I decided that now was the time to change my office as well!

Office Renovation Before ExampleWhen the office was first renovated many years ago, limited funds forced the owners to provide laminate countertops attached to two adjoining walls as desks – a good, affordable option.  The issue I had with it was based on Feng Shui.  Granted, I am no Feng Shui expert, but I know that having your back to the door is the most vulnerable and least powerful position in the room

It was time to seize the opportunity to do some demolition and fix my office’s Feng Shui shortcomings. I left my officemate’s side the way it was, but took a saws-all to my part of the counter.  Then I painted the walls what I learned later was a very “on trend” color – a week later I visited the Southern Living Showcase Home and the cabinets in the Entertaining Kitchen were the exact same color. Who knew I was such a trendsetter?
 Office Renovation After

Next I brought a desk and shelving from home and VOILA!  Now I get to face the door and have my supplies to my side and not over my head (undoubtedly a Feng Shui nightmare!)  The side benefit to the whole thing was that somehow I gave the office about 20 more SF.  At least it feels that way!  Here is the semi-final result – still have some trim to replace…

but I love it and can feel productivity soaring and that calendar on the wall filling up with hot appointments and exciting new opportunities already!

Nice looking change and who wants to sit with your back to the door?  Wanta know a secret?  I just realized that my back is kinda facing the door at least one side of it is.  Wonder if I should change my home office around.  I may.

Make the change, Rosemary!  No need to do it as long as I did.

Patricia, thank you so much!  That's awesome!

I'm with you Shelley.  Never thought much about it until a few years ago, but I always had my back to the door.  Switching it around did make a difference.  Since then I have moved offices three times and always situated to have me facing the door.

But I do like looking out the window, so I am sorta positioned weird in the office.  Probably looks horrendous and is a mjor violation of some other Feng Shui rule, or at least a "staging" faux pas, but I am content and less look-over-my-shoulder-y.

Shelley, sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands.  You probably feel like you know "own" your little piece of that world.

One of the great things about my office is that it is small and we all take a bit of ownership in it!

Hi Shelley, I do like the color for sure! It would be a good color for our office (to bring some spring color) in since the everything is still white outside.

If I lived in Alaska with y'all, I'd have to have lots of color inside!

Shelley, we are in the middle of a snow dump nd I would go with just about any other color than white right now.

A few days ago we were clear of most of the snow, roads were great, spring was just around the corner but now it looks like a white Christmas again!
