Metal Roof Specialties---when you need to replace your roof in Seattle

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

It seems like all we ever hear is stories about how crappy contractors are today, or how difficult it is to find someone competent to do the jobs we need done around our homes.

Green roofGood luck to any contractor trying to please a home inspector!

It is my pleasure, in this post, to recommend the roofing company, Metal Roof Specialties that recently installed a new standing-seam, steek roof on our house.

Green roofOur roof had been headed toward replacement for quite some time and when it actually started leaking this past Thanksgiving we finally realized that we had to look seriously at options for replacement.

I was pretty adamant that we were not going to install another asphalt roof on our house without considerable gnashing of teeth.  Out of respect for the planet and dwindling resources I wanted to install a metal roof.  I figured that we would likely be in our home in another 25 years and then we would have to install another roof at a time when we could least afford to do it---in what would likely be our “limited income” years.  This consideration more than offset the higher cost of the metal roof.

Green roofWhen Joe came to discuss options for the roof, it did not take long to see that he knew more than the average roofer.  He was aware of ventilation issues related to roof structures and had more than a rudimentary knowledge of building science pertinent to roof structures and homes in general.

From start to finish it was a pleasure working with the entire crew that did the actual work.  Their attention to detail and care of the property in the context of the replacement was much appreciated.

It is not very often that one gets to be proud of a roof---but our new metal roof is awesome.  I look forward to years of easy moss control, considerable reduced maintenance and that we were able to take this small green step with our green roof.

Mr Buell, well that sure is a pretty roof. Got to love a nice standing seam roof when installed correctly. Really does dress up the home well also. See it can be done right.

That's one good-looking roof!  How long will it last, 3 or 4 years?

I'm a little displeased at the color though.  You couldn't have gone Redskin colors?  What's up?  Stripes are very chic now.

What resources are dwindling?

Happy Monday Charles! I wish I had the same experience with our cabins metal roof. It all comes down to getting a quality roofer...

Fred, thanks---they did a great job and they were just fun to work with.

Kristin, I think in time they will become even more common

Sarah & Les, thanks---I make a good policeman :)

Don, and no more leaking :)

Steven, a case of word of mouth---the only way to go with something like this.

Jay, we lean a little toward green around here---with the Sounders and the Hawks and all :)  As to dwindling resources there are lots of places to use oil products besides in things that don't require any.

Paul, what did they do wrong on your roof?

Robert, thanks and nice talking to you as well.

Good Morning, Charles. You really hit the nail on the head when you talked about "Crappy Contractors"... But then, they do keep us in a job...

If I could afford a metal roof I would put one on my house!  It has nothing to do with green or saving the world.  It has to do with common sense, which, by the way, you so rightly describe in your post!

And as to resources, I was tweaking you, which you already know.  Economics says that no resource can dwindle.

It's getting toward spring.  Almost time to send my First Internet Date some flowers.  Or chocolate.

Hi Charles,

A very good looking roof install. Not many have those nice even cut valleys.

A very good looking job my man. Never know what we are going to get when we call a contractor to work for us. You got a good one.

Have a great  day in the Seattle area.

Best, Clint McxKie

Michael, yes---most contractors represent our future :)

Jay, I would love to know how economists twist the language to come to that conclusion :)

Clint, the valley cuts look so nice because they were not done on site

There's no twist!  As something "dwindles" and gets scarce it gets more expensive.  As it gets more expensive other things get more attractive in price - substitutes, product differentiation, etc.  The original thing which was scarce is either replaced or no longer purchased.  It will never go away.

What resource is getting scarce?

I talked about your roof today!  To a lady whose house has a very leaky metal roof.  She was deciding what to replace it with, so I told your story!

Ahhhh now I get it!  Economics without a conscience:)  And how could it not be going away if it is getting more expensive?  Unless of course there is "artificial scarcity"---like diamonds.

Boy are you sarcastic!  It has nothing to do with conscience.  It is what it is.

To create a diamond to put on someone's hand requires dramatic more effort than to put an apple on someone's table.  So they are necessarily more expensive.  There is no scarcity of diamonds.  It's cost of production.

But true scarcity cannot exist.  People complained about the cost of candle beeswax in Franklin's day.  His solution was Daylight Savings Time, so people would burn their candles less.  The cost of beeswax went down.

I would suspect, but don't know, that more beeswax is used now in the form of honeycombs in honey jars.  But it is not scarce today and it is certainly cheaper as compared to our incomes and theirs.  But what is it used for?  Candles?  And we have production techniques they did not have in Franklin's day.  There will always be a use for beeswax.  And buggy whips.  And typewriters.

Go buy a totally useless, but in perfect shape, original Olivetti typewriter.  What do you think it would cost?  Why so much?  They are scarce.  Could you buy a new ribbon?  No conscience there.

Charles that is a very attractive roof indeed, but I'm not sure which I enjoyed reading the most. You very well written and illustrated post, or the comments going back and forth between you and Jay. It doesn't really matter, both are excellent and provided very pleasant reading.
