When the Lights Go Out in Fairfield

When the lights go out in FairfieldWhen the Lights Go Out in Fairfield...

Unfortunately in the last 10 years I've had my share of power outages in Fairfield, New Jersey but only two were major outages.  The first one was October 29, 2011.  I'll never forget it - it was day of my 40th birthday party and a historic nor'easter buried us! Power lines were down on my road caught fire and our power was cut along with half of the town's, including the VFW hall where we were to celebrate my 40th.  Fortunately enough I have good friends who did have power and we moved the birthday bash to their home.  Our power was out in Fairfield for at least 5 days.

Hurricane Sandy ripped through New Jersey with a vengeance.  Once again leaving many homes in Fairfield without power for over a week!

So what do you do when the lights go out in Fairfield?

Conserve your cell phone energy.  Charged cell phones, iPads and tablets can definitely come in handy during a power outage but remember do NOT drain your cell phone battery if you have no way of charging it.  Power outages can lead to emergencies and if you do not have a landline (simple and plain, old-fashioned wired landline) you'll need a phone to call for help

when the lights go out in FairfieldCall your electric company.  We take it for granted that someone else called and sometimes everyone thinks the other person called when in fact, no one reported the outage.

Candles are a great way to light up a room but remember they are also a fire hazard.  Blow out ALL candles before going to bed.

Limit opening the refrigerator or freezer.  When the power is restored - remember when in doubt, THROW THE FOOD OUT!

Pass the time by reading a book, playing cards or having a family game night by flashlight

What prompted me to write this post?  Tonight the lights are out for many Fairfield residents.  So far I haven't lost power but when the lights go out in Fairfield.....its dark!

This are all great guidelines for being prepared for having no electricity, and how to handle it.
