The Plan

By
Industry Observer with ARFCO Media

I’m getting a couple of old PC’s out of the closet and ready for recycle. I took a look through the hard drives for anything I might want to keep before I nuke them.

I found a PowerPoint slideshow I used in 2006 as a backdrop for some of the social media talks I did traveling around Oregon. Going through the slides (it seems like a hundred years ago now) some things have come and gone yet many remain, though their roles may have changed.

Notice Activerain launched in 2006 and it's in the design!

I’m a visual guy and love sketching out ideas so I can picture The Plan. This slide is about creating and visualizing your online presence. Funny, Twitter also started up in 2006, but not in the mix yet.

The Plan. A visualization of creating your online presence back in 2006.

One thing that was apparent was the tremendous growth of Google and how we were all becoming searchers. Being successful online was not like traditional advertising, the paradigm was changing. Being online was more about them finding you. Though we have more sophisticated means today, the axiom behind it all still remains true.

My longtime friend and coworker Janet Matzke is an exceptional artist. After many conversations about having an online presence and how to be found online she created this wonderful image. It’s still one of my favorite marketing pieces from back then.

How will they find you? A marketing piece by Janet Matzke.

We’ve come a long way since 2006.

Tecnology is increasing so quickly and 2006 sounds so long ago.  Amazing how far we've come.

Hi Jane... I should do one by hand! :O) Dan... Perhaps lost in time? Next, "the end of social media" ;o) Hi Debbie... I think we're going to reach a saturation point of how much we can handle and how many ads we can tolerate and how much intrusiveness we can put up with and will escape to quieter (members only) simple platforms... Marc: It is amazing! When I started getting actively involved online back in the 90's I remember being over joyed getting a new 14.4 modem... now, there's new platforms and gadgets coming out every day that totally dazzle the imagination.

Rene, Love the sketch and see some things in there that we're still using despite how rapidly the tech/social media landscape changes.

Rene,

I frequently use a mind mapping technique to get my ideas down on paper...or iPad now.

René, it's really nice when you can see the whole picture at one time. Your sketch reminds me of Mindmapping. Something I use when I have to give a talk.

I was just commenting to my son about Google glasses. .

wearing them and meeting someone and by face recognition you could immediately see their record and if they are wanted by the law. . . .things are going to change in our near future. .

Lora: Yes indeed, the change is exponentially faster over the past few years. Kent... Me too. With Siri around now via iPhones, I'm thinking one thing for sure, we'll probably talk more to (and with) all of our devices. Liz & Bill: That was one of the first things that struck me. The things that faded away and the things I still use. I really thought retagger would stay around. I thought it was really a great app. Hi Richard and Michael: Do you guys use Mindmeister.com... It's a great mind mapping app online. Fernando: Google glasses brings a whole new dimension into future forecasting! I think we will see some big changes in the near future for sure.

René,I love mind mapping. For me, it is still an effective strategy until today. The devices and the technology that we use right now are just improvised and updated.

Rene: I imagine the next several years will see even greater changes. Who knows? One of the big mediums (Twitter, etc.) may get replaced or bought or re-configured. All I know is this. I find social media to be useful. But there will always be a place for personal connections. Thanks for your post!

Hi Paul... Agreed, the personal connections are the most important. Afterall, that's what all this technology is supposed to help us do. Thanks!
