Seth Godin's BIG Mistake

not-seth-godin-twitter

Imagine waking up tomorrow and someone starts a conversation with you about your Twitter account but... you don't have a Twitter account! Believe it or not, this is what happened to marketing guru Seth Godin.

In a post on February 2, 2008 Darren Rowse of Problogger mentioned his recent conversation with Seth Godin about his Twitter account and the 1400+ people following Seth on Twitter except Seth doesn't have a twitter account!

Fortunately it just seems to be a fan or admirer who has set up the account and is simply "twittering" content from Seth's blog. He(Seth) also commented on the news, obviously this could have turned out completely different and I think it teaches us all a lesson!

Our name and our reputation are so valuable and so easy to screw around with. If you haven't already done so, start registering your name(personal & business) at all the major social networking sites as soon as possible.

Even if you don't use them or don't have the time to do much with them right now, it's worth the precaution. Think of it as safe sex for your online persona. It's better to be safe than sorry and... worst case scenario, you'll have another link back to your website, blog or both.

There are a ton of social networking sites & tools out there, here are just a few of the biggies you should be registered with, feel free to add any others in your comments.

Marti... again, some great information.  Thanks for starting to share this stuff again on a weekly basis. I know it's tough, but it's hard to keep up with all of these blogs in different groups. Especially since I missed so many of these.  thanks for your effort.

Wow important message and preventative advice.  I thought the "big mistake" was fake for sure when I read the title.  Very interesting and important.  Thanks for the heads up here.

Marti - As usual another great list. What happened to Seth is so interesting - It really could have turned out a lot worse. The other thing I would mention is setting up a Google alert for your name. In fact that is how I got here this morning. I would have visited anyway, as I am a subscriber, but what if I wasn't? I may never have know you mentioned me. I like the Pro Blogger site as well. Did you see the Gooruze site I mentioned last week? That may be a site you would be interested in. Thanks again Marti.

Hi Marti - now this post is a great way to start my Sunday morning reading!  Thanks for the links to those social networks.  I'm already on most of those but there were a couple I need to check out, plus this is a reminder to make sure I've completed my profiles on those.  Bill's post was a great pick and he's always sharing awesome sites and tips for marketing our blogs and sites.

I had missed the story about Seth, and you're right that that could happen to any of us.  That's a scary thought, so this is a good tip for all us to be as vigilant as we can be.

Marti,

Amazing compilation of posts....most of which I haven't read yet. I'll put them on hold til later this week as today is far too crazy already.

WoW, imagine the nerve of someone taking our name and image and using it to register on other sites. Is that even legal?  scary indeed.....I'll definitely have to register on more of those sites after reading this.
They take an incredible amount of time though....with all of the contacts, etc, that you need to follow up on (although the business contacts are certainly welcome and that includes business networking).

The new logo looks very beautiful and other-worldly. Excellent job.....the alternate dimension AR.

How could someone do that to Seth?  Shame on them!!!

I mean, Seth is a rock-star, all-star...no one could or should even attempt to impersonate him.  I suspect anyone trying to pretend to be Seth would wash out pretty quickly.
