Report Spam when you see it in ActiveRain. This will not only help purify our system and let the tech support people know how to close those gaps, but we can earn points for doing it, too.

The Russians, Spam, And Active Rain Points!

The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming....okay, they're not just coming, but they've been here, repeatedly, and they're coming back daily!  We're talking about spammers!  Now I don't understand what they get by posting in Cyrillic when most of us are English only, but apparently they find some value in doing this:
spam

Now our first natural reaction when finding spam on our posts or elsewhere is to let loose with a few select descriptive words and some questioning of the spammers' heritage and then click delete and send that comment to cyber hell.

But that's NOT the best response!  If you didn't know, you'll know now, Active Rain gives you points for reporting spam, up to 10 spam reports a day at 10 points per report.  That's an extra 100 points.  Now you could do this 7 times a week, but don't expect to necessarily get 700 extra points.  It's a manual process and depends on how much time the Rain staffers have, so realistically expect Monday to Friday you'll gather points.  So 500 "bonus" points per week if you make a habit of reporting spam.

Now HOW do you get these points?  When you find spam, in the bottom right you'll see "Report a concern".  Click that and a pop window will come up and say "thanks", and repeat on other spam comments.

SpamNow we've noticed the spammers are more persistent and in more volume, so when you find a post with a lot of spam comments, you might want to bookmark it and keep coming back.  Spam is like Tribbles, they just keep repopulating.

Spam may be hiding on your old posts (the email notification system for comments doesn't send alerts for these for some reason).  It's not a good feeling to find literally 100's of spam comments on a consumer facing post, so spot checking your old posts might be worth your time.  We resorted to turning off non-member comments....didn't want to, but we don't like the spam bombing of our posts.

Now how can you find these spam to report?  Well you can read a lot of posts and check, or you can put the AR Search function to work.  Hit terms like Uggs, Kardashian, Gucci, pick your favorite male enhancement drugs, etc.  You get the idea.  Scan the preview screens and it'll be obvious where the spam is.

Yes, you too can become a spam killer and increase your points at the same time!

Keep On Blogging,

Debbie, Thanks for the reblog!  Spam is one of those topics that needs the occasional broadcast so the new folks know what to do with them to help the IT group close the gaps.
