You Don’t Know What’s Buried in the Clinging Ivy; Is That Wood Rotted?

We had the opportunity to look at a dumpster enclosure with large wood members spanning the width of the unit. Until recently, the wood was fully covered with clinging ivy. The ivy created a dark, moist environment for bugs, animals and rot. Looking at the unit today, we can see that the wood is dangerously rotted and needs to be removed.

I've seen this many times under the ivy, too.

This is easy to miss Michelle, the ivy can get pretty thick, very quick.

Never a good sign, but I look at it a little differently. I see this kinds of issues as an opportunity to purchase, renovate and resell.

Yes, ivy can be destructive. We had some on our home a long time ago and I remember them removing it so we wouldn't have any issues.

Plants growing on anything do severe damage.  They are not pretty.  They also introduce moisture and insects into the property.

Tom -- we had to remove Ivy from our back fence this winter.  It was covering both sides, and that made it especially fun to get rid of.  When finally got down to root of the plant it was over an inch in diameter.

Ivy can be very invasive too Debbie, it can get under and pry up parts of the exterior of the building.

The plants do have a way of opening the door for the pests don't they Jay?

Steven - I've seen fences so strong that the fence had no structural support but the plant growth held its own.
