FOLLOW UP---My Health Related Goals for 2013

In my original post My Health Related Goals for 2013 (An ActiveRain Challenge) I discussed how it’ been a challenge for me to stay focused on a healthy diet and how it affected my health.  I had started to eat healthier and along with the support of my husband, our household has rid itself of the majority of JUNK food we used to stock pile our shelves with.

I also needed continued support from my physical therapist and other bloggers who are writing in the Get Healthy in the Rain Group   I was hoping to obtain other recipes and dishes to accommodate my needs, lose more weight and bring my blood sugar and cholesterol counts down and all around just being healthier.

I “cheated” a couple of weeks ago.  I went to Starbucks and I ordered a mocha coffee with no fat milk and two Splenda.  I then ordered a cinnamon roll --while reasoning that my friend  said if I add a dash of cinnamon to my coffee it would lower my blood sugar.  HAHA!  Who was I kidding???  Well, I ate the whole thing and it tasted sooooo good!

I RELAPSED!.

So, here I was full of guilt and I immediately called by husband and  told him what had happened.  (Immediately means AFTER I polished off the roll lol) Next time I will seek support BEFORE I do it and I promised I would call my husband the next time I have these thoughts!  On the same note, I picked myself up, dusted myself off…..AND STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN.

Where I am at NOW:

·         I have continued with exercises (I started PART II of physical therapy) and doing them every night on days I don’t go to physical therapy.  In return, I am strengthening up a lot of muscles I have not used in a LONG time.

·         Continued with my small meals with my chicken or fish salad at lunch being my main meal. I have oatmeal and an English muffin (minus butter) and a little jelly and we usually have a light cream of wheat or cereal for dinner.  Yogurt is my in between (I have to have at least snacks in between meals)

·          In return, my blood sugar has gone down to 121 (my highest was 170 with the exception of it shooting to 368 after the epidural steroid shot) and I’m now only taking one Metformin (meds for Type 2 Diabetes) every evening after my dinner.

·         I have lost only 11 pounds since I started right before Christmas and haven’t lost any more the past month. The main point being I haven’t gained any.   I have however lost INCHES! My slacks are baggy and I’ve bought new pants and blouses. (only a few so I can graduate to the next size)

My biggest challenge at this point is to get motivated to start walking too.  I need to step it up a level but keeping in mind not to overdo it.  So many times I have tried to diet and overdid it on the exercises. I am so grateful to MILILANI PHYSICAL THERAPY for their support and help with understanding that I have limits and helped me with exercises to work around the limits.  Did I mention that massage was part of my physical therapy sessions?

All in all I feel healthy and have a better feeling about myself. We went to Bellows AFB Cabins on the beach last weekend and I had so much fun with my grandson, husband and daughter.  I even got sun burned!

YAY! Still going strong…

And having fun doing it!

Wow, that is really impressive. Eleven bags of sugar...eleven pounds.. is a big accomplishment when you look at it that way.

Sally, You are doing an amazing job.  Awareness of where you are, your weakness, and where you want to be is half the battle. We all fall ... that does not define us. It strengthens us when we acknowledge our frailty.  I feel your commitment and desire to b healthier.  Hug yourself ... love yourself ... you deserve it. You can always call me when you want to indulge ... I support your decision to be healthy.

With fresh fruits and especially vegetables, you can eat a MOUNTAIN OF FOOD with negligible calories, fat, etc.

Lets shake things up at your home today!

Kudos to you for losing weight, lowering your blood sugar and exercising.  I agree with Lenn though, you need to add fresh fruit and vegetables to your daily meal plan.  Keep counting carbohydrates, they are very important to keep your blood sugar regulated.  Featured in my group "Take It Off In The Rain".

CHERYL!  WOW!  Now THAT is a great way to look at it.  THAT (sugar) was my whole diet before!  I will continue to keep that in mind to stick to my goals.

Kathleen: I started to tear up with your comment. It has been an upward battle to get to the point I am today.  I will surely keep you in mind as one of my strongest support systems!

Thank you Sharon....getting there!

Mike: Thanks much!

Lenn....Okay...my weakness is not eating ENOUGH veges...however, I forgot to add my 'cuties' into the snack mix.  I have to get a taste for eating plain veges although I am faithful with my salads...which consist of romaine (or manoa) lettuce, cherry tomatoes (or from our garden, which we were lucky to have a few this past week), carrots, broccolli (just a few) and some steamed chicken or fish on the top.

Roger:  Thank you!  It's been hard work and yes...I need to add MORE of those veges.  My blood sugar has come down but I'd like to bring it down MORE.  Thanks for the feature in your group!

Don't beat yourself up for a relapse!  It happens to everyone.  Just do what you did, get back on the program and keep on trucking.   Quick weight loss isn't the goal -- it's permanent weight loss.

Sally, every once in a while you have to have a treat.  You could have quit or kept on "cheating" figuring that you had already "Blown your plan"...but not you!

On the same note, I picked myself up, dusted myself off…..AND STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN.

You didn't start all over, you started from where you had already gotten to!  Don't downplay your accomplishments!  Losing 11 pounds is wonderful, dropping your blood sugar down 50+ points is amazing.   Don't worry about the scale, concern yourself with how you feel, the support of your wonderful husband and the changes you are seeing in your body!

WAAAAHHOOOOOOO!!  Great job!

Warm Regards,
Maryland Mortgage Mama

Dianne and Bridget:  Thanks for your support.  Believe me...it's been a hard struggle and I've learned that I can treat myself once in awhile so I don't have a full blown 'falling off the wagon'.  I had a ice cream cone yesterday and it was nice.  I enjoyed every lick and bite!

Great progress! And great motivation not to give up when a relapse occurs. I've spent a bit of time on Active Rain this morning, and can feel a faint re-kindling of my motivation. Thanks for adding to that!
