Back to Nature: A Trial Lake Adventure (Utah's National Forests) Part 1

The morning sun beams through the bedroom window as if to say “good morning, time to begin the day”. With excitement we quickly get ready for a day trip to Trial Lake and one by one we load up all the necessities in the car.

  • Fishing License
  • Jackets
  • Cooler
  • Fishing Gear
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Camera

Trial Lake is located in the high Uintas of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest 25 miles above Kamas Utah and the 42 mile journey from Salt Lake City to Kamas provides the everlasting beauty of Park City and Jordanelle.  Once we arrive in the little country town of Kamas which is well known as “The Gateway to the Uintas” we’ll stop in at the little grocery store called Kamas Food Town on 145 West 200 South  to pick up our worms and those “Oh I forgot” items. Lastly, we’ll top off the gas tank at the gas station located in the parking lot of  Food Town.

Yeah! For the next 25 miles as we’re heading up to the Uintas on Highway 150 we will be surrounded by the beauty of the deep green pines, tall sleek quaking aspens, and the friendly hellos from town folk as we’re passing by. Amongst the vegetation we will see deer, moose, squirrels, chipmunks and hawks.

Then the children yell with excitement, “ to the left, it’s the sign for Trial Lake”.  The road which is unpaved will lead us to a visual masterpiece of Trial Lake and the other anglers who have found out about its wonder. Not many people know about Trial Lake and the other hidden lakes around Bald Mountain.

As we’re unloading the car of our goods for a successful day of fishing and hiking it’s hard not to be captured by the beauty and the peacefulness of nature. Once we find our fishing spot we’ll spend hours casting out our lines and pulling in those little fighters one by one, only to release them back.  It’s always a pleasant surprise to watch the fish as they dance out of the water throughout the day to catch the larvae that lay upon the water’s surface.  Trial Lake is certainly a place to find the magic in nature.

Later in the day we will take a hike to Crystal Lake which is a small hidden lake in the mountains. There we will view more brilliance in what the Uintas have to offer and have hopes to see a wandering moose with its massive build.

Our outdoor adventure to Trial Lake may have to come to a close, but one thing is for sure, we will have had a day filled with so many amazing ventures and never a dull moment.

When May to October come around set some time aside and find the beauty in our Utah National Parks, such as Trial Lake because you will be so glad that you did.

Facts about Trial Lake:

Those pictures are absolutely beautiful. What's the weather like in May? Is there still snow on the ground at the higher elevations?

Julie - That part of the country looks absolutely breathtaking!  I would love to go for a visit and see the snow!  It has been many years since I have seen snow, about 21 years.  My youngest son says he has never seen snow, but in fact he seen it when he was 1 1/2 yrs old, he just doesn't remember.

Beautiful pics Julie, when I see a post like this it makes me ask myself why I'm still putting up with the wickedly cold Canadian winters here in Montreal.

Christina: Thank you for the inspiration to write on "Back to Nature". Living in Utah we have so many opportunities to be one with nature. Have a wonderful week.

Craig: Oh yes, there is still snow up there in May. Last year we even ran into snow up there in June, but it's so much fun and absolutely beautiful at Trial Lake. The amazing thing about it is the hidden lakes surrounding it and the beautiful waterfall that I will feature in another post. As far as the temp in May, it varies, but from last years experience I recall it being about 45-50 degrees. Not too warm in May. I should clarify that and put it in the post. Thank YOU my friend for your support.

Candy: You are welcome to come and visit us anytime in Utah. There are many opportunities for your son to see the snow here in Utah. They are never too big to play in the snow. Thank you for commenting and your continued support.

Carole: You would love this are indeed. It is just that, "spectacular". There are spots where you can take a blanket or a chair and just tuck yourself in the pines and watch the beauty and be one with nature. Our family absolutely loves Trial Lake. If you ever decide to come out and visit we will welcome you with open arms.

Adam: It is so beautiful in Utah and it's such an amazing place because you have such variation in scenery depending on where you go. Wait until I get to Southern Utah. The views are spectacular there too. We live in Northern Utah so it takes some planning to get down south.  Thank you for your wonderful comment and for being so supportive my friend.

Ginger: Oh yes, dogs are allowed. You have given me something that I should add to this post. Thank you for that question and for your kind comment.

Marti:What is your average temp out there this time of year? We have had a rough winter this year. These pictures are not from the current season. Those pictures are from spring time at Trial Lake. Because of the high elevation, there is no way we would be able to get up there right now. It is so beautiful though. Thank you for your comment.

Tom: You would love Utah. It's an incredible state and we have so much to offer here. If you ever want to take a trip out here, make sure you give me a call and I'll take you on a tour. The elevation at Trial Lake is very high and at this time of year, there is no way we would make it up there. I'll have to check updates, but I do know that it was mentioned the roads were closed right now.

Katerina: You my friend did get to lavish in the beauty of Utah's nature and majestic mountains. We love to go fishing and hiking.  It's a great time to just be together without any distractions of the city. The very nice thing about it too, is most of the National Forests are within an 1-2 hours for driving. Thank you for your comment and when you decide to come out to Utah again, please call me for a day of fishing.

Lenn: August is a fantastic time to head up to Trial Lake and many of the other lakes in higher elevations out here. I'll be waiting for you to arrive in Utah and I'll take you out for a fun day in Utah's mountains. Thank you for your comment.

Lori: Thank you so much for visiting and if you ever decide to visit or move to Utah, give me a call and I'll take you on a fun tour of Utah's lakes.

Glad to know you do catch and release when you go fishing. I was hoping to see in the list of fish at Trial Lake, you would also have Bass in it. They do like to eat Trout, Bass really like brown Trout.

If I was to move to your area of Utah, Julie you would be the Real Estate Agent that I would want helping me with buying a home.

Dale: You are truly such a kind hearted soul. Thank YOU so much very your wonderful comment. I didn't know that bass ate trout. That is quite interesting! You should see the big Brown Trout my hubby caught when we were first married. It has this incredible hook jaw and really isn't that attractive in my world, but for men, well my hubby and boys think it's the greatest thing ever. Well my friend, if you ever to make it to Utah for a visit or a move I will be here to give you a tour and show you the way. Enjoy your day!
