Can I Afford To Put Solar on My Rural Home? How solar panels power a Home

A few years ago, very few of us could even think about installing solar in our homes.  All of a sudden, though, solar power has become much more affordable than ever before, actually within the reach of many Americans.

A year ago to put a solar systeSolar on a small homem in for a small off grid home, about a kilowatt, would have cost about $20000.  Now prices of components have come down and the technology has improved so much that you could have the same system (actually better because of those improvements) installed for about $13000.

30% Tax Credit on Solar Energy InstallationsIn addition, through 2016, the government will reimburse you 30% of your cost, including design, parts, and installation.  In other words, if your system costs you $13000, at the end of the year, you would receive a tax credit of $3900.  A tax credit, money you will back at tax time as a refund.

Do you want your own cool vacation retreat?  Do you want to retire to the country?  Do you dream of homesteading the land?  You can afford to install solar on your rural cabin, sitebuilt home, modular, maybe even your yurt or platform tent and live on the sun's abundant energy.  See Many Rural Northern Arizona Listings Below.

Judith - Very informative post. I guess the next question is, "how much does solar save you per year?"

Thanks, Kevin.  In the rural (off-grid) systems I was thinking about, there is no power available from an electric utility, so having power allows you to pump your water, run your washer, and turn on your light.  So even a small system lets you have the basics.  In a grid tied (one where the home gets power from an electric utility) system, it depends on several variables.  For Arizona, for example, if you put in a 5 Kilowatt System for from $13000 - $17000 (the costs vary by area and contractor) and your power cost .13/kilowatt hour you would save about $125 on your monthly power bill.  And don't forget the tax credit on top of that for, in this example, from $3900 to $5100.
