Reminder: Daylight Saving Time Starts on Sunday March 10, 2013
All States in the US where Daylight Savings Time ( DST) is observed will be adjusting their time forward by one hour beginning at 2 AM Sunday Morning March 10, 2013. My advice to all folks here in Katy Texas and beyond is to turn your clocks ahead one hour when you head to bed on Saturday night.
As a rule of thumb, DST begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November every year. The best way I have found to remember which way the clock moves is the old saying “ Spring forward and Fall back” . DST end this year on Sunday November 3, 2013.
Most areas in the United States observe DST with a few of notable exceptions being Arizona ( except for Navajo Nation) , Hawaii and territories such as Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and US Virgin Island.
A brief history review finds DST was not formally accepted in the US until Standard Time Act of 1918. The whole concept back then was very unpopular and Congress overrode President Wilson’s veto and abolished this law. DST became a local state option and was observed in some states until World War II when President Roosevelt instituted year round DST starting in 1942. The year round DST lasted until September 1945 after the war was over.
During the years 1945 until 1966 there was no federal law concerning DST but there was a glaring issue of national uniformity. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 corrected this issue. Starting in 1967 standard time was mandated and DST was allowed starting on the last Sunday of April and ending on the last Sunday of October.
This requirement of beginning and ending of DST lasted until 2007 when the current change days were enacted as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Don’t forget to change your timepieces as not doing so can cause all sorts of major issues.
