Texas Independence Day Celebrated by Fort Worth Home OwnersThis past weekend, Fort Worth home owners were busy celebrating Texas Independence Day on Saturday, March 2. From backyard barbecues with family and friends to the festival, there were no shortage of events and Texas pride. The holiday commemorates the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence 177 years ago when 59 delegates worked overnight to pen the Texas Declaration of Independence during the Texas Revolution. Ultimately, it led to Texas' independence from Mexico.

To keep the celebration going, The Star of the Republic Museum’s new exhibit, “The Substance of Life: Texas through the Eyes of Theodore Gentilz,” is running now until May 31, 2013. The exhibit includes 16 oil paintings that date from the mid-19th century. Celebrating the life of Theodore Gentilz, a Frenchman, who came to Texas in 1844 and helped plat the town of Castroville, Gentilz is also credited with bringing attention to the San Antonio art scene. He later moved there and his art focused on the everyday life of the indigenous cultures, including Indians, Mexican ranchers, and villagers.
