2013 North Carolina Statewide Tornado Drill

North Carolina’s annual statewide tornado drill for 2013 takes place today, March 6, at 9:30 AM. Schools, businesses and families across North Carolina are strongly encouraged to participate in the statewide tornado drill.

While this may seem like a fun adventure for younger children who get to miss class for a few minutes, tornado drills are very important for everyone to participate in.  As we all know, tornados can be very destructive and dangerous.  Many lives and homes are taken each year, and having a plan can save you and your loved ones.

Unfortunately, tornadoes do not offer a whole lot of warning, so knowing what to do and practicing your plan is critical.  Experts recommend that in the event of a tornado, head to an interior room of your home or business, if possible, a room with no windows or exterior walls.

If you have pets, remember to include them in your drill.  During severe thunderstorms and hurricanes with Tornado Watches, my family prepares the house by closing every door.  This keeps the cats and the dog in a smaller area of the house, making it easier to “catch” them in the event of an emergency.  Each adult grabs two cats, Tanner grabs a blanket and calls the dog, and we all hit the guest bathroom.  The guest bathroom is stocked with an emergency kit which includes first aid, weather radio, flashlight and batteries and drinking water.  This may seem silly to some, but having grown up in North Alabama where tornados are all too common, and living in coastal areas for 18 years of Hurricanes & tropical storms, I take these things very seriously.  I have seen what they can do.

If you live in North Carolina, please participate in the 2013 Statewide Annual Tornado Drill and be sure that your family is prepared.  For more information about tornado drills and other events for North Carolina and other states, and how to be prepared, visit http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/severeweather/severewxcal.shtml.

Please note that in the event of actual severe weather occurring this morning, the NC Statewide Tornado Drill will be postponed until Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 9:30 am.

Good Morning, Amy. You are right about tornadoes not giving much warning. I think that the drill is a great idea and should be taken seriously...

Hi Amy, how ironic,  today is a day that could be producing some real tornados ! The high winds coming with this NorEaster are already at 45 mph I believe ! I had no idea about the statewide drill, thanks for sharing !

Good Morning Michael!  I like to be prepared, and was pleased to learn about the statewide drill.

Roger - Thanks.  We will be creating a plan at our office today.... Better safe than sorry, Always!

Dorie - Apparently, a lot of state have events like this.  I never knew, but glad to be participating this year.

Michele - Right?  I just let the dog out and feared she would blow away!  At least it's warm out :-)  I didn't know about the drill either until the MCPDept. posted about it on Facebook.  Good to know.

Hi Amy,

Good to see you back in the Rain.

Have you been that busy? :-)

It's always a good thing to have drills. Even if it is for a bad thing like a tornado.

Have a great day in the Crystal Coast.

Best, Clint McKie

Amy, in the last couple of years or so we've had more tornado warnings, wind storms and even a couple of hurricanes come through. We put together an emergency kit. It pays to be safe and know what to do. Good reminder.

Clint - It's good to be back in the rain with you fine folks.  It is rainy and windy here today, but I expect it to be a great day anyway :-)  You have a wonderful day in the Desert too!

Michael - You are so right.... It pays to be safe and prepared for severe weather.  With a hurricane, at least we have fair warning, Tornados.... Not so much.

Amy, very helpful list of being prepared. Hopefully everyone has a plan. Even in our area where we rarely see tornadoes, they do happen and we all should be prepared

Great post! Thank you for reminding us how important these drills are and our school children will be participating. I used to teach and even as a drill can be scary to children...but better prepared and not need it than need it and not prepared. Thank you for posting.

Amy, we were talking about tornadoes last night while watching the weather channel for info about this latest storm.  We don't get a lot of them up here but when they do come through people really are not prepared for them.  This is a good program.

Tornatoes!?  This morning we're having wind gusts of 35 MPH.  I feel like we're getting a drill already.  Let's hope we never need to know what to do but you're so right.  We should be ready.
