Maryland Considers Statewide Bag Tax

Many areas are trying to find ways to to reduce the use of non-biodegradable shopping bags that harm wildlife and litter streets, drains and bodies of water.  The Washington Post reports that Maryland would be the first state to enact a statewide bag tax.  As might be expected, bag manufacturers and their lobbyists offer creative arguments against any plastic bag restrictions.

Would a statewide bag tax provide an effective reduction of the use of plastic shopping bags?  The District of Columbia and Montgomery County, Maryland have a 5 cent bag tax. Since 2010, studies show that plastic shopping bag use in the District has dropped by half and by about a third in Montgomery County. Last year, Montgomery County collected more than two million dollars from the bag tax.  That kind of funding will pay for a lot of clean up efforts. A statewide tax would generate millions of dollars in tax revenue and there would be a sizable reduction of the use of plastic bags.

Those of us that live in Montgomery County, Maryland now carry reusable bags when we go to the grocery store.  It is just a matter of changing some habits.

What is your state doing to reduce the use o non-biodegradable shopping bags?  Do you have any creative new ideas?

Roy as far as I know my state isn't doing anything at all to help curb or control the problem. Pa is a little behind the times on many things. My family and I always use paper over plastic. We also use recycled canvas shopping bags.

Soon they will tax the air we breath.... I'm sure they will find a way to prove that we harm the environment by breathing to much!

I used to see a lot of people with re-usable grocery bags around here, but since the reports of the bacteria they carry have come out, people seem to be backing off on their use.

Thanks for your feedback.

Joetta:  Opponents of the legislation have suggested that the reusable bags could harbor germs.  That may be news in Europe, where they have been common for many years.  Yes, cloth bags may need to be washed or discarded when they get dirty.

Roy,

Here in Ontario most retailers & grocery chains will charge a .5 cent fee on plastic bags. Always near a check-out there will be canvas, cloth, of reusable vinyl bags for $1.00...which all save on the environment.  The plan was put in place about 5 years ago - bit of an adjustment in the first year...but now it just seems natural!

Roy, I like the reusable bags but must admit I forget to carry them with me. It is a matter of practice and I need to work on it.

Roy - I just thought it was interesting to think that even the suggestion of bacteria seemed to make such a difference in people's habits locally. I'm not certain that's what caused the change, it just seemed to be.  We have such odd ideas about our food.

For instance, my husband insists on putting veggies in individual plastic bags.  The other day, he brought home one clove of garlic in a plastic bag, inside of another plastic bag.  Why?  It seemed 'cleaner' to him.  But who knows how many people touched that clove of garlic before it was arranged so prettily in the bin?  And before that - it came from the gound.  Gasp!

Well enough of that.  I'm going to go wash my re-usable grocery bags now.

LOL, there goes the government trying to correct a problem it caused. Paper bags are bad! Outlaw them or charge a tax when people use them. Replace them with plastic bags, because no trees are harmed!

Ahhhh, the plastic bags don't bio-degrade and get blown all over the place. Plastic bags are bad! Use paper bags...oh, wait, paper bags are bag too! Use the reusable bags! Yes, that is the ticket. (Wait, reusable bags carry all sorts of disease because people put meat and fruit and things repeatedly into the same bag and they are never cleaned???)

Hmmm, maybe paper bags aren't so bad after all......   :-)

Thanks for sharing your perspectives on the use of plastic shopping bags.  The tax on bags may not be the best idea but it has changed the habits of tens of thousands of shoppers in DC and Maryland.
