Google+ massive cover photo and more

I recently wrote about the standard sizes that work best for pictures uploaded to popular social media sites. Google has just announced a facelift for their Google+ pages. The biggest new thing is pretty big, visually.

While you can use photos of any size and aspect ratio, your Google+ cover shot can now be as large as 2120 x 1192. That's a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. Cropping your photos to that aspect ratio will allow it to cover the page evenly and without distortion.

Your profile picture is now going to show up as a circle, too. Just to drive home the point about circles.

Use a photo you have permission to use, okay?

Your Google+ page may not have the new capabilities yet. To find out, go to plus.google.com/me. If you're "on", you'll see a message asking you to upload a new cover photo.

The update includes a new Local tab and a revamped About tab. The Local tab is where all of your Local reviews, +1s, and YouTube videos will reside. You can show or hide anything in the settings.

The About tab has different cards ("Story", "Places", "Links"), and all the objects in the cards can be linked and shared with your circles, or made private.

So now you know.

Interesting, Brad. I just checked and I got the message to upload a new image. I'll have to sset aside some time to look for a good image to use in such a large resolution. Thanks for the tip!
