One More Question …. What Is In Your Medicine Cabinet?

One More Question .... What Is In Your Medicine Cabinet??

Is this a question you ask your sellers when going on a listing appointment?

If not, I would highly recommend that you begin.

Recently an agent shared with me that she was holding an open house in an expensive neighborhood and two young guys walked in.  She related that she immediately got that gut feeling that this was not good.  She moved to the kitchen where one followed and the other immediately ran upstairs.  They never said a word to her, but soon the guy who had gone upstairs came back down and the two of them turned and left.

She thought the whole incident very odd.  After thinking about it and relating it to her sellers they concluded that these two guys were looking for medications/prescription drugs.

After hearing this I have begun to ask the question … What is in your medicine cabinet?

I share this story on listing appointments with the sellers and encourage them to remove any medication that might be considered of value to another.

Keep your sellers and yourself safe.

Good evening Claude, that is a great check list to cover and you are correct that we can't keep our eyes on everyone especially if they split up.  Thanks for commenting.

Hi Trisha, it is probably best that we don't know some peoples plans and intentions.  It is best to stay on the side of safe.

Good evening Ron and Alexander, antibiotics are a hot commodity and no matter if animal or human, they will be taken.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Steven, thank you for re-blogging my post. I so appreciate you for doing that. It is definitely an important question to ask.

At the listing appointments as I go through the listing agreement, I always go through the list of items that should be put away:  small electronics, prescription drugs and jewelry.  I've never thought about weapons, but I will mention it now.  Good idea.  I also stress to my sellers that agents must accompany their buyers, and should have a business card or proper ID when they show a property. My clients safety is paramount.  I always tell them that I've never had a problem, but I have heard of items being stolen at other agents listings and I don't want them to be the first.

Hi Kristi, it is amazing the things we think about as we go thru a home.  There are so many things that need to be locked up or removed for safe keeping.  Thank you for commenting.

I have started taking a camera to all open houses... get a good shot of everyone who enters.  I will add your question to my list.

Judith, not only medicine, the sellers MUST be instructed to 'hide' all the valuables, laptops, expensive electronic gadgets etc etc. Open House is not the time to display wealth.....

Judith - This is an important question for sellers to be asked. It's unfortunate.

Wow, that never occurred to me.  How awful that they are probably going to all the open houses and doing this.

Really great post! It's a sad one, as well, but makes us all think! I will be sure to refresh my list of questions that I normally ask on listing appointments - thank you for pointing this out!

Hi Judith....there was an agent in our area many years ago (he is no longer in the business!!) and he had a drug habit...would PREVIEW every property that came on the market....the seller would leave so the agent could preview comfortably!! they would notice a dresser drawer not completely shut.... it was finally determined after he was dismissed from every office that he was searching for drugs not underwear!!

What a great reminder! and something that probably many sellers don't think to do!
