Fort Lee is located in Prince George County; within the Tri-Cities Area in southern Virginia the cities of Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights all border Fort Lee. They offer a friendly small-town environment and are the principal commercial and services centers for the region as a whole. Fort Lee is approximately 28 miles south of Richmond, 47 miles west of Williamsburg, and 136 miles from Washington, DC.

The post is steeped in Revolutionary War and Civil War history involving this entire region. Named after Robert E. Lee, the most renowned Confederate Civil War General, the original Camp Lee was formed in June 1917 to support troop training for World War I. After that war, Camp Lee became a game preserve, but was reopened in 1941. By year end a full program of Quartermaster training courses was conducted, including Officer Candidate School, making Camp Lee the center of both basic and advanced training of Quartermaster personnel. In 1946, the War Department announced Camp Lee would be retained as a center for Quartermaster training. Official recognition of its permanent status was obtained in 1950 and the post was re-designated as Fort Lee. Since then, Fort Lee has continuously served as the home of Quartermaster study and training.

Children can attend public and private school in Prince George County. The Kenner Army Health Clinic handles health care, with additional care at Columbia/John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell. Post recreation includes bowling, arts and crafts, golf, pool, gyms, tennis, skeet range and jogging track.
