This Sunday, March 10th, marks the end of Daylight Standard Time. So, "Spring forward," or just set those clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night.
Yes, we lose an hour of sleep through summer, but we get more light during the day and can pretend Spring is here!
Also, I want to be sure that you, your family, home and business will stay safe as we leave Winter behind like a lion and start the warm months this year.
Here are some helpful hints from Hillary that go along with the time change thing at / by 2a this Sunday:
Change the batteries in all of your smoke alarms.
Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
- No smoke alarms were present in 40% of the home fire deaths.
- In 23% of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound. After inserting fresh batteries in your detectors, make sure the Alarm is working by activating the safety test button. (National Fire Protection Association).
Count Your Smoke Alarms
Because we clean up after devastating business and home fires, we highly recommend that you have a properly functioning Smoke Alarm in every sleeping room and in the hallway directly adjacent to those rooms.
Clean Your Smoke Alarms
Help your Smoke Alarm remain sensitive and ready to protect you by gently using a vacuum cleaner once a month to remove dust and cobwebs from your alarms.
Retire Your Old Smoke Alarms!
Smoke Alarms work every minute of every day. After millions of sensing cycles, they should be retired.
Most local fire departments will give you a free fire detector or two, so replace your Smoke Alarms with new devices every 10 years.
A little known fact about the batteries in emergency exit lights
They become useless within a year from installation; even if permanently plugged into electricity.
So test the battery life by pushing the test button to see if it is still holding a charge...and drive your dogs or cat crazy -- ours hate this testing stuff. Otherwise, just have it replaced by someone savvy about electric hookups.
Plan & Practice Your Escape!
· Children are at increased risk of dying in a home fire because they often become scared and confused when a fire erupts.
· Make sure your children recognize the sound of your home's Smoke Alarm and teach them to respond instinctively to its signal; your employees too!
· Create at least two different escape routes from every room and practice them with the entire family.
· Be sure all family members and employees know the lifesaving practice of crawling below the dangerously thick smoke and intense heat of a fire.
Check Your Flashlights
Make sure your emergency flashlights work when you need them. It is a good idea to keep a working flashlight and a whistle near your bed, one or near your kitchen where most fires start, plus put them in your basement and family room.
You should have at least one flashlight with extra batteries at strategic points in your workplace or business, too.
Install Fire Extinguishers!
Install at least one fire extinguisher in or near your kitchen and know how to use it. For business locations, you want an extinguisher available to you every 75 feet in your facility. Hang them at eye level on the wall, clearly marked with a bright yellow/back extinguisher sign that's available from your service provide.
If you don't have a provider for your business or workplace, get one, because they inspect and service these lifesaving devices. An extinguisher may save a life before the fire department can reach your property!
