Did you say your mother is moving in?

Very often these days I am getting requests for Mother/ Daughter homes with 2nd kitchens and living rooms, as well as  homes with extended bedroom suites with full baths on the main floor.  More and more families are moving in together  for many different reasons . Some families  decide to move in together to share expenses, empty nestors are now moving in to help care for  grand children of working couples or single parents, and post grads are moving back home until their careers take off. Whatever your reason may be, it will be a major change in your lifestyle and living together can be challenging.

Here are some things to consider before making the move

Are all family members amicable to the proposed living situation?

Is this a long term plan or short term?

How much living space does each member of the family really need?

Do you have a realistic budget, if so  who will be contributing to the purchase?

Will you be sharing expenses?

Whose name will go on the deed?

Where do you want to live?

What type of home are you looking for?

Have you been pre-approved for a mortgage?

If you are  ready to take the plunge to extended family living, the next step is to call a Realtor to find you the perfect place to call home.

I believe we may be seeing a trend of multiple generations of families living together becoming more common into the future in America.

Joan, this is a trend I'm sure we'll be seeing more of. Homes with casitas are very popular in Temecula Valley California. Thanks for your post today,

I have been getting more requests for this kind of home than I used to, and I do not see the trend changing.

One of the big issues can be zoning, so avoid problems by checking this out early in the process.
