We're hoping to kick start a green real estate movement in Nicaragua. Have a look at our day-to-day construction blog for the first Nicaraguan Earthship - completely off the grid and a great example of green building. Brooke Rundle (check her out on facebook) is one of the key prople involved.
Have a look at http://www.cbnicaragua.com/blog/category/earthship-construction-day-by-day/   We'll be running a series of green real estate tours later this year mixing property tours, earthship building and volunterring.  Would love to collaborate with others on this.  Please get in touch if interested.

Neat! What differences are being built into this earthship over the dessert ones, I would think that Nicaragua would have a very different approach due to the different climate. My guess would be focusing more on non-evaporative cooling and much less on heating.

Hi Michael - thanks very much for the comment.  Yes the Earthship design works in both warm and cold temperatures.  Quoting from the Earthship Biotecture site -

"If you want coolness, you admit the cooler earth temperature and block the sun. The cool mass of the earth connects with the mass of the shelter, is absorbed into the shelter mass and leaks into the living space. This is like hooking a big battery (the earth) up to a smaller battery (the shelter). The thermal mass of both the earth and shelter is a storage battery for temperature."

Here in Nicaragua, we have set the back of the Earthship into the land in order to facilitate this themal exchange.  We'll be running some green real estate and volunteering tours later this month where people can get involved with building an Earthship as well as touring outher property options.

Hi Claudia, I am like Stephanie and would like to hear more! I must admit I had to check the map to get a good idea of location! I have been following what has been going on in Costa Rica also...how does Nicaragua compare? It sounds like a well thought out development!

Hi Stephanie and Mary, Thanks very much for your comments.  We are putting the final touches on the "green real estate and volnteering tours" and I would be pleased to forward this to you.  It would be great to hear any ideas that you have on generating coverage for the tours and the Earthship initiative in Nicaragua.  Also we are very open to ideas on collaborating with this going forward.  We really want to see Nicaragua get put on the green building and green real estate map.  One of the most exciting aspects of the project has been the involvement on the local community of El Carizal (just south of San Juan del Sur on the Pacific coast) in the building of the Earthship - hand-in-hand with the experts from Taos, New Mexico.  The learning and sharing has gone both ways.  I'm just about to upload Day 25 and Day 26 on the Earthship construction blog.  Thanks again for your thoughts and comments.  Claudia

Dear Cyrus,  Thanks very much for the idea of hosing a Green Drinks Event.  I had a look at the website and was excited to see that it is a global initiative with the event having been held in many countries.  Appreciate the suggestion and I'll have a closer look.  Claudia
