The Bible on History Channel

By
Industry Observer

I hope and pray that the numbers for The Bible on History Channel keep growing and keep exceeding Ten Commandment tabletsexpectations. I saw the first two episodes and it's second to none visually speaking. The first installment garnered over 13 million viewers and many I'm sure really don't know many of these stories. It was the top rated show of any network including the big 4. I applaud Mark Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey for putting such an effort forth.

I have only one wish further than having many people exposed to the living Word and that would be accuracy. There are many instances of them that we've seen so far, many abridged versions that leave out very important details, a few total fabrications that are just wrong and the one this past Sunday that really caught my eye was a brunette King David. The historians were very sure to point out in the Book that he was ruddy or what the kids today call "a ginger". OK, maybe being a ginger myself (or once was) gives me more motivation but there were so many inaccuracies in David's timeline story as well that I had to pick one. Overall, even with all that's not right, the story is told.

The main reason for my post today is this, I hope and pray that this series drives people's curiosity to check out the original and best reference for themselves and learn the ancient love story between man and God. If you haven't tuned in yet, there are reruns of the original 2 episodes running on other channels, and this past week History showed the last episode before the latest one back to back. If you have plans these next Sunday evenings, cancel them, or set your DVR, wake the neighbors, phone the kids as The Bible unfolds every Sunday at 8PM on History Channel up to and culminating on Resurrection Sunday, March 31st.

You can also catch up online here.

Great post!  I have been hearing a lot of encouraging things about this series, although I know a lot of believers had their hesitations.  We have not seen it because we do not have tv.  I know that sounds strange but we do watch some things online.  I am going to try your link and see if we can get it.  Thanks for sharing.  I know God is using this in a lot of peoples lives.  What great timing too with Easter Sunday just right around the corner.

IMHO, biblical stories, when told well, will always get great ratings. And thanks for the heads-up...I'm going to make sure I catch what I can with 'on-demand.'

Bob & Bonnie -- Thanks for this review of this new project.  What you said, is what I had heard this morning at a meeting of pastors I was at, that there were some issues with following the text in a few places.

Brenda, We're in awe of anyone today without tv. Good job.

Bill, Kudos you are almost up to Brenda's level.

Karl, I agree and don't understand why they have to Hollywood them up at all. The scene of angels acting like Ninja warriors was a bit hard to swallow. From what I understand of warrior angels is that they are usually 12 tall or better and scare the crap out of the most brave just by showing up. There are so many reports by soldiers fighting in Israel, and from both sides, of seeing these manifestations in the heat of battle that just makes people run from the sight of them.

Steven, You would think that it wouldn't be hard to follow the scriptures, but keep in mind, the people who wrote it have probably never cracked a Bible. The casting of Samson as a black man was interesting and I can't find anything in the scriptures that would say different so who can say. Most likely he was more light skinned like all the other Hebrews since he was a Danite.  Rahab ties the scarlet cloth to their door in a Passover type explanation when it was clearly hung from the window which the spies escaped... and there were many more discrepancies. Nonetheless, many are being exposed to the ancient truth.

Than, I'm sure you'll have plenty opportunity to catch up as this will be sold on DVD starting in April... and it will run and run again lots I'm sure.

Just to clear up the Biblical accuracy thing: The creators of this series consulted "a wide range of pastors and academics," including their friend Joel Osteen, Joshua Garroway (a rabbi from Hebrew Union College), and a Catholic cardinal. Geoff Tunnicliffe of the World Evangelical Alliance, read each episode's script and visited the set in Morocco: he "wanted to be sure that the final edits would hold together as a singular thematic message throughout the entire series" and "was not disappointed."

Other project advisors included:

  • Rick Warren (Pastor, Saddleback)
  • Erwin McManus (Pastor, Mosaic)
  • Sam Rodriguez (National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conferenc)
  • Paul Eshleman (Campus Crusade for Christ)
  • Bobby Gruenewald (YouVersion Bible)
  • Brad Lomenick (Catalyst)
  • Leith Anderson (National Association of Evangelicals)
  • Frank Wright (National Religious Broadcasters)
  • Tom Peterson (Catholics Come Home)
  • Gabe Lyons (Q)
  • Luis Palau
  • George Wood (Assemblies of God)
  • Craig Groeschel (Life Church)

Karl, Awfully hard to imagine those people... oddly all men, would get the scriptures wrong. But either they did, or my Bibles, of various interpretations are bogus. It reminds me of Band of Brothers and how meticulous they were about being accurate but when you talked with Dick Winters, who the writers constantly consulted, they got a lot of details wrong... and usually for dramatic effect. (Dick was a long time friend of our family) I'm pretty sure they had no idea how all the details would be portrayed is my guess. I'm not a theologian but I read the Bible every single day, it has become part of me and each time I see an inaccuracy, such as a brunette David being consulted out in the field instead of a ruddy David brought in from the field to meet Samuel the prophet inside with his other brothers and father... I know it instantly. No interpretation I'm aware of left out the fact that David was a red head, a most unusual and uncommon trait in those days. But regardless... many are hearing the Word preached once again. I would like to challenge you to watch and then research the text for yourself and you decide.

Good point about the lack of female advisors. Christianity and the Bible do interest me, but in a cultural and political impact way rather than historical accuracy. And I do read some theologians like Bart Ehrman.
