My first post about puzzles was:

Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? How About A Pre-Schooler?

I hope you enjoy this one as well!

(It's okay to use a calculator)

PUZZLE:

There are 7 girls in a bus

Each girl has 7 backpacks

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats

For every big cat there are 7 little cats

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

This is a real math problem (so don't say that a bus has no legs)!

Whoever gets the correct answer first wins a prize!

Have fun!

Lucky :)

Lucky are you counting the bus driver as one of the girls or is that an additional person?

Hi Lucky - I got this in an email the other day, and I'm not sure anyone actually answered it correctly then!

Eric - First Place!

Congratulations, Eric!!!

Jimmy,

Nice try, but no driver was mentioned!

Ann,

It really isn't that difficult.  Just simple math.  Unfortunately, most of us don't use simple math enough to stay sharp enough to do story problems like this.

Thanks to all for participating in the fun!

I had to borrow some fingers to figure it out...

7 girls *7 backpacks * 7 big cats *4 legs = 1372

7 girls *7 backpacks * 7 big cats * 7 small cats * 4 legs = 9604

7 girls * 2 legs = 14

1372+9604+14= 10,990

See what that extra year of college did for me.

Please wire my winnings to my off-shore account...

Eric,

Is your off-shore account in Aruba?  If so, I'd move it!

They have difficulty handling things (and people) from the U.S.

New details on 20/20 tonight.

Sad ordeal!

On a brighter note,

Congrats Again!!!

Hi Lucky,

Thanks for another fun post! I always like reading your blogs. I was going to set up a spreadsheet and enter some of the critical data, crunch it a little... then I thought, naaah.

James,

That hurts, that really hurts!

It is still around zero here!  Or as we sometimes say, "Colder than a well-digger's a$$!"

Thanks for the word problem. Schools teach the students to look for the trick part of the question now. It's good to have a straightforward question to get the brain in gear this morning!

Dang it, I was off by 14, I forgot to count the stupid little girls who shouldn't be bringing cats on the bus in the first place.

I'm not telling my dad who was a 5th grade teacher that I didn't get the right answer!
