Special offer

Our new Harps Grocery in Searcy AR is almost finished.

I am impressed each time I drive home and see the progress made on our new Harps Grocery in Searcy AR, our little town of about 20,000 people.  Our appetites are whetted.  What will they offer?  Great deli?  Fresh seafood?  Produce that will rival Wal-Mart's?

If you have one in your town you might satisfy my curiosity and give me hints.  There are gas pumps too.  Will we get gas discounts because we buy groceries inside?  I pulled over today and took two photos of the store.  I'm posting them.  Does it look the same as the one in your town?

Can I believe my eyes/ears?  Does a real estate person actually refer to her area of operations as a "little town of 20,000"?  There used to be a definition of town, city, etc.  Searcy is no longer a "little town" by most standards.

Scott's father, we're still little......when compared to Little Rock.....big compared to Beebe or Kensett.  Who's next in this mysterious family of my past?  LOL

Well, I guess I'd better jump in here, too. I am Scott's stepmom, Carol Nash (Goodin) Smith. I haven't been to Harp's yet. My friends' Beverley Hogan and Beverly O'Neill have encouraged me to go when we are there at the river, so maybe one of these days I will make the plunge. I am so addicted to my routine of Wally World that I just head in that direction. However, we did pass by Harp's the other day and commented on it. Maybe we will give it a whirl. However, if Sharon and Scott don't think it is so hot, I don't know . . .

How are you doing Barbara? haven't talked with you in about 30 years or so. I'll bet you will have to rack your brain to even remember me. :-) Small world, huh!

Carol, the whole family has me bumfuzzled.  I need some photos to refresh my memory.  Tell me something to make my memory buds wake up.  They act like they are trying but just can't get cranked.

Scott Smith (the blond one)

Let's see how much information we can give here without really giving enough ('cause it's so much fun.)  My classmates included Will and Missy and Scotty and Steve and Sara and Julie.  My Dad knew a guy named Temus (spelling?) pretty well, and used to leave rubber snakes for him to find.  My stepmom worked closely with coaches, principals, and librarians, and my sister never had you for a teacher.  She just knows something about Harp's.

And my stick men are fabulous.

Okay, memory, if correct, means that Scott Smith (the blonde one) was also a jabber-jaws then and perhaps now?  Will was my step-son, Missy was Boyette, Scotty I forget, Steve (there were so many Steves, Sara (Wiseman?) and Julie would be Rand.  Temus was the janitor at SW Middle School and you'll were playing cruel jokes on him.

More hints, please.......

Well, how about this:  if Scott is a jabber-jaws, then I am a nitpicker, and I am wondering about the apostrophe between the Harp and the "s".

That's not much help, though, because only secretaries at SW and Ahlf knew how picky I was.  Let's see.  I taught next to Jim Christian and heard all of his movies through the wall.  I enjoyed Mr. Wilson's announcements every morning.  I had gone to Ahlf by the time the gym burned.

Scott will tell you those last names, but I know that Sarah Wiseman was later.  He is probably talking about Scotty Valentine and Steve East.

Do you realize how many years ago that was???  I think most of those kids took choir so they didn't have to come to my classes.  More hints, please.....

P. S.  Now I'm afraid to answer because my grammar might be improper or my spellin rong.....

To the Scott clan....you need to read my later blog about Harps lying to me about my avocados.

The blonde headed Scott who was a jabber-jaw is probably the correct one. Both families lived on Mohawk Dr. I was an English teacher and taught one year at Southwest but most of my time was spent in Bald Knob. The Smiths lived two houses down from the Goodins. He was a science teacher at Southwest and then at Ahlf. I left Searcy in 1984. I am going to try to send photos.  Gordon and I didn't marry until 1998, so you would not have made that connection at all. I was formerly married to Carroll Goodin and have two sons, Kevin and Alex, and we went to the First Methodist Church. The Smiths were Presbyterians.

Carol, do send photos.  I looked back at an old photo of teachers at SW but couldn't figure out the puzzle.  I hate that my memory is so bad.  I was looking for a photo of my cotton-topped jabber- jaws too but couldn't find it.

Also check my current blogs.  This one was old and I don't know why you found it.

I taught English my first year of teaching and was very frustrated.  It was a hard subject to teach. Art (Careers at SW) was much easier.

Barbara, I have some pictures to send if I can figure out how to do it. I have asked Scott the computer guru in the family, but he is coyly not responding. He probably has figured out that I am wanting to post his picture. :-) We will see what happens. Carol

Scott's Big Sister

I am sitting here giggling my head off at the jabber-jaws suggestion and affirmation!  (Yeah, yeah, yeah...I know, Scotty...you had to talk at school because you couldn't get a word in edge-wise with two big sisters, right?)

Speaking of two big sisters, Ms. Duncan, you might have known our sister Diane Smith who worked at the hospital for ages.  She was a couple of years older than Scott, so I'm not sure if you would have had her in class or not.

You'll will have to send me pictures.  Smith  is such a common name.  It is even my middle name!  Too bad we didn't have yearbooks in the middle school.  I guess Scott is back there pouting because I called him a jabber-jaws?

No, I'm not pouting.  I just didn't realize how fast the rest of my family works.  I haven't seen a way to post pictures yet.  There is an e-mail contact for Barbara, but it doesn't allow for attachments.

Okay, here's something that should work.  Go to barbarasduncan.com and there is a regular e-mail link there.  You can attach pictures with that.

And Barbara, Dad is right about Steve and Scotty.  The Sara was Sara Fisher.  I just remember she was in our art class.

7th grade was our first year in Searcy, so sister Diane would not have been in your class.  I think she started in high school.

Scott, I don't believe non-members can post photos but if you email the photo to me, I'll post it for you.  I do remember Sara Fisher.  You'll were a bunch of sweeties, really!
