This is a different kind of venting - and it's good!  It's about cleaning your vents - in your home!  We all do all kinds of things to keep our home clean from complete top to bottom scrubbing, getting rid of things we don't need anymore - and most do everything else necessary to maintain things like their water heater and changing filters in heating/cooling systems.

But sometimes, you have to go a little deeper into the cleaning!  Which I recently did.  After reading about what lurks in air duct vents, and because the home I lived in used to have a swamp cooling system, I decided to have the vents professionally  cleaned.  And I am lucky I did.

Here are just a couple photos of the dirt and debri that was inside a couple of the vents I could see:

According to the EPA, 50% of illness are caused air aggravated by indoor pollution; and indoor pollution is 70% higher inside a home than outside.

Benefits of having your vents cleaned include:

  • Improve air quality in your home
  • Remove allergens that cause headaches, breathing problems and allergies
  • Clean registers loaded with dirt and dust
  • Improve unit efficiency
  • Reduce indoor odors
  • Remove stuff left behind from previous owners, home builders or roofers

If you haven't thought about having your vents cleaned - maybe it's time.  My home took about 3-4 hours (it's a big home - lots of registers and duct work); the process includes cleaning and sanitizing vent registers and vents, and the company I used has a high speed circular broom that cleans, vacuums and sanitizes all at once.  My air almost immediately smelled better - combined with new air filters - it was worth it!

Swamp coolers can definitely aggravate allergies. Replacing air filters on a regular basis helps keep dirt out of the ducts. Some times a deep cleaning is needed, Good reminder, especially this time of year. Thanks for your post today,

Gabrielle- I remember years ago a friend's mother called in a professional duct cleaner and she sung the praises of what a difference it made.  And it did.  She used to be sick with allergies and colds and realized that most of her issues were coming from her own home.

I have recently noticed much more dust in our house - specifically on the 2nd floor.  I am thinking that cleaning the vents might also help with this.  Thanks for the idea!

Clean vents can make a major difference in dust and allergies - even the smell of a home!  My newest listing had the vents cleaned before going on the market.  Not only did the system sound better but smelled better too.

Greta post...people forget about what may be lurking in the vents.  You never know if the previous owner's cats had a hideout down there and left some surprises!

This is so true. Offices are the worst. Lots of people and sadly the filters and vents are not taken care of in a timely fashion.

You're so right! some of the things we have seen in forced air ducts is shocking and getting it out of there is important and at the same time moving the dust around can cause other problems.

Gaby,

Great idea!  When we get the houses cleaned for our executive rentals and when seller's get the houses ready for sale, we try to make sure they vacuum all of the vents and get the dust folks just ignore out of there.

Haven't done the ducts though!  Think that is more for the benefit of the folks living there!

All the best, Michelle

Gabrielle, and I thought this was going to be about the venting that went on in my home last night by my wife about how I don't listen. Your post was much better, and you are correct. Clean the vents and live and breath better. Great post.

Gab,

I've had the vents cleaned before. It's been about seven years now...time for another cleaning I suspect.

GOOD MORNING WIKA!  Glad to hear it!

GOOD MORNING CHARLES!  After 17 years - I think yes!

GOOD MORNING RICH!  The person who did ours said that it should be done about every 5-6 years.  Sooner if you have pets!

GOOD MORNING MARK!  That's funny Mark - so, you were listening to my post!?!

GOOD MORNING MICHELLE! Sounds like you do a great job for the rentals!

GOOD MORNING PAUL!  That's "yuck" - yep amazing what lurks inside them!

GOOD MORNING COOPER JACOBS!  I was concerned about moving the "yuck" around - but the system the vent cleaners seemed to do a pretty good job to vacuum almost all of it up.

GOOD MORNING PAUL!  Had not thought about office spaces - but I would imagine those would be good to clean too!

GOOD MORNING B! See - if you've done it - then we know it's a good thing!

GOOD MORNING PETER!  Oh yeah - that's the feeling I got when I saw something about vents - let me know if you end up doing it!

GOOD MORNING MARC!  I agree - and yes, weird things end up in vents!

GOOD MORNING BRYAN!  Wow - what great sellers you have - and yes - it does make a difference - almost immediate!

GOOD MORNING RICHARD & BETH!  It does seem to make a difference for those who need extra clean air!

GOOD MORNING MARGARET!  I think it might - if nothing else, it will be cleaner air!

GOOD MORNING KATHY!  Isn't that amazing that our homes can make us sick?  It's nice to hear when something like this makes a difference for someone!

GOOD MORNING PAMELA!  Swamp cooling is the worst - tends to leave behind chunks of rust, sand, leaves- whatever is in the air at the time!

GOOD MORNING PAT!  I hope you do - I waited too long to make the decision to do this - and glad I did!

GOOD MORNING TIM!  Yes - it was kind of surprising since I thought I kept my house pretty clean!

I was coughing and sneezing a lot in my Tennessee home years ago.  By chance I received a free home inspection flyer from a duct cleaning company and thought, why not?  It's free.  I was skeptical, but no more.  I was shown the filth in my ducts and it persuaded me to let the company clean them.  The difference it made was undeniable.  The air that's returned to the room is so much fresher.   And my sneezing and wheezing was vastly diminished.  It is a good thing and those who are prone to allergies should definitely have their ductwork checked out.
