The City of College Station needs citizen volunteers for their Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection in April 2013.The vernal equinox takes place tomorrow, March 20, 2013.  After tomorrow, the daylight hours will become longer as we usher in a new season.  This is the time to not only welcome spring into our lives, but a good bit of spring cleaning in our Bryan-College Station homes as well.  The City of College Station wants to help you clear out your clutter.  They will be holding a special spring household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, April 27th from 7am to 2pm at the University Services Building (3380 University Dr. East).

Search homes for sale in Bryan-College StationYour regular Bryan-College Station curbside garbage collection will not allow certain types of household items that are deemed hazardous.  These include cleaning solutions (such as carpet cleaners, disinfectants, oven cleaners, spot removers, toilet bowl cleaners, floor polishes, etc.), automotive waste (brake fluid, oil, battery acid and windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze), insecticides/pesticides, ignitable materials (lighter fluid, air fresheners, adhesives, gasoline, kerosene, paint strippers, wood stains, WD-40, etc.), computers, fluorescent light bulbs, prescription medications and CFL bulbs.  These must be disposed of separately to avoid leeching harmful materials into our soil and water tables.  That's why events such as this one are so important.

The City of College Station is currently in need of volunteers to help with the high amount of traffic the household hazardous waste collection is expected to bring in.  They are asking citizens for their help with traffic control, litter collection and other duties required throughout the day.  Volunteers will be working in 2 1/2 hour shifts (6:30am to 9am, 3:30am to 11am, 10:30am to 1pm and 12:30pm to 2pm).  To be eligible to volunteer, you must be at least 17 years old or have your parent or guardian with you.  All volunteers will receive a special T-shirt to commemorate their service as well as a meal and refreshments.

If you are interested in volunteering, you must sign up by the end of business on April 19, 2013.  You may sign up online by visiting the City of College Station website here, emailing your request here or simply call the volunteer number at (979) 764-6228.  All assistance is greatly appreciated.

The Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection event in College Station is the perfect time to dispose of any hazardous materials lying around your home for free.  Clean out the garage, clear out the medicine cabinet and make room in your storage closet.  Spring is a time for refreshing and renewing.  Clearing out extra "stuff" is a great way to start.
