The Tammany Trace is a scenic recreational paved trail with a parallel equestrian trail with recreational facilities along its path. St. Tammany Parish acquired the railroad right-of-way from the Illinois Railroad in 1992 and the Tammany Trace became the first and only Louisiana railroad to become part of the National Rail to Trail Network. With the help of government funding and grants, the railroad was reconstructed to a 31 mile asphalted trail for the 290,000 pedestrians, bicyclists, equestrians, roller bladers and joggers who enjoy the The Trace annually. The Trace, also a wildlife conservation area, has also become a great place to learn about the Northshore's natural habitats, bayous, wetlands, streams and rivers.
Making its way through many St. Tammany residential communities, the Trace passes through Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell providing nine memorable stops along the way. There is an assortment of recreational parks and beautiful views which can be admired from atop 31 railroad bridges built on the original railroad trestles. The Trace is a popular destination for residents to enjoy their daily exercise and the many parks along the way provide a great place for children to learn and play.
The Tammany Trace is funded in part by The Tammany Trace Foundation. This private, nonprofit corporation raises funds by hosting the annual Holiday of Lights, numerous walks, rides and other events to fund the continued improvement and expansion of The Tammany Trace.
