The Vernal Equnox - Egg Balancing 101

The Vernal Equinox

If you were up at 7:02am this morning in New York then you greeted Spring & the Vernal Equinox.

The Vernal Equinox arrived!! Spring is now officially here. Let the festivities begin. My husband and I started a new tradition last year: "The Equinox Egg Balance". This morning at breakfast my husband was able to stand this egg on axis. It is not as easy as it looks. After ten minutes of my trying and failing he was able to accomplish the mission in under one minute!! A true talent!!

Egg Balancing Newburgh NY

From what I learned last year, the egg will balance far more often than I ever thought. It has become a most entertaining breakfast event. I only wish we did it when our kids were little as they would have appreciated the efforts.

It is an old tale associated with the Equinox that I heard when I was a child. Mom never let me play with raw eggs, so we never experimented. I am not sure where the urban legend originated, but it was thought that the gravitational pull would allow this to happen. Not true. You can balance that egg at anytime.

The translation of the word equinox comes from Latin vernal (spring) aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, night and day are about equal length. I translate this to mean that spring is soon to follow. The Vernal Equinox happens in March when the sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. For most of us in the US it happened before sunrise. As for me? I was just getting out of bed when the alignment occured. At 7:02am the sun was peeping over the horizon without a bird in sight. There actually was an occasional snow flurry this morning.

I thought maybe you too would like to try to balance an egg. If so, here is a tutorial that will help.

So as I get ready to start the day and watch the snow melt on my front lawn I am comforted with the idea that spring really is on its way. This year a little later that last, but it is sure to arrive. Maybe I'll even find the first robin of the season in my backyard.

Interesting story, we will have to try it. We don't have snow in Corpus Christi, just a lot of wind and sunshine. It is nice to know spring is here. I will have to let you know how long it takes for our egg to balance. Thanks for sharing.

I always forget about the vernal equinox until it is too late to try.  Does this equinox last all day or is it just for a few minutes, hours or what?  They should always let us know a day prior to the occurrence so we can give it a try.

Hey Joanna.. scrabbled eggs are great.. maybe next time

Roger.. i could not get it to happen. I will leave it to the experts.

Chris and Dick - Let me know if you are any good at it.

Roger... you can try it anytime. There is no special gravitational pull any time at all.

I always thought it was true.. but alas another myth... and no easter bunny

Janis, I heard somewhere that you have to be able to balance your life in order to balance an egg.  If so, I am hopeless!

Barbara - I never knew you were a teacher. SO many Realtors had a previous life before selling homes. I think a good number of us were in very nurturing professions though. I  used to be a nurse.

Thanks for the reblog!! and Happy Egg Balancing!
