The world can’t survive without leaders.  In fact, they’ve been around since the
beginning and, have changed the course of history through determination, innovation and inspiration.

Chances are, you find yourself looking up to certain people in the real estate industry who are set apart as leaders in the field.  And, while the first thing that comes to mind when we hear the term “leader” might be a dynamic person with a “Type A” personality; leaders come in various forms.  There are those who lead quietly by example, those that are leaders without even realizing they have followers and those that take their role as leader by the reigns and find ways to inspire those around them.

No matter your personality style- if you’re a natural born leader, or have been placed in a position of leadership- there are a few overarching qualities that the best leaders possess.

The best leader...

1. Empowers Others- Some of the best leaders empower others to do their job well.  People want to follow those that they feel valued by and who trusts them to carry out their tasks.  Gone are the days of micro-managers.  Today’s leaders are confident enough in themselves to allow others to take the reign!

2. Is a Team Player- The best leaders have proven themselves as part of the team.  They’re not above certain tasks and will jump in when needed!  They use the language of “we” instead of “I” and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.  People want to follow them because they are in the trenches and know exactly what’s going on.  They’re not aloof to the issues that their team is dealing with, but will be willing to lend a helping hand.

3. Provides Constructive Criticism- We all need to hear constructive criticism from time to time.  The best leaders will make sure to keep the emphasis on “constructive.”  Leaders that belittle those underneath them, who are constantly criticizing without providing a solution, or who are simply venting just to vent will lose their audience quickly.  Great leaders give criticism and insight in a way that makes the person want to do better and work harder in the future.

4. Is a Positive Influence- Being a positive influence can be played out in a wide variety of ways, the above three points included.  Positivity will go a long way in a team and can a great catalyst for change in your company!  Whether is giving a helping hand, providing mentoring, delegating to empower others, or facing problems in a calm manner; being a positive influence will bring about a great sense of loyalty and trust in your team.

We’ve all had experiences with both great and not-so-great leaders.  It can be easier to pinpoint what we don’t like about a leader, rather than highlighting and trying to emulate the traits of a great leader.  I hope this blog has been helpful as you take a look at your leader or work to become an even better leader in your workplace and the real estate industry!

Do you find yourself in a leadership position?  If so, what’s your leadership personality? What do you feel is the biggest challenge with being a leader?  What’s the most rewarding aspect?  We’d love to hear your thoughts!
