Air Freshener Alert! TRUE OR FALSE??? Are ActiveRain Members Spreading A False Rumor??

By
Real Estate Agent with Lenn Harley, Homefinders.com, MD & VA Homes and Real Estate 303829;0225082372

The first time I heard of this matter was an ActiveRain post.  See:  plug-in type room fresheners causes home fires

I reblogged it.  Shortly thereafter I got a note from Alan May with a link to a SNOPES alert that the warning was false.

I deleted my reblog immediately, but the matter continues with more reblogs of that alert.

Which is true.  DANG IF I KNOW!!!

What I do know is that I wouldn't want to spread a "False rumor".  Further, the Snopes.com article covers the matter thoroughly.

It's worthy of reading:

Glade PlugIns Fire Hazard

Claim:   Glade PlugIns brand air fresheners have been proved a significant fire hazard.

Status:   False.

I saw that post and had never heard that one before.  So I did not comment except to say that I hate the smell in my hair after an inspection with a house full of those nasty devices!

And Snope is two people in a closet telling the world what is true and false.  My question - how do they know?

Well I read the Snopes article, and it certainly makes sense.  So who knows for sure.

Good morning Lenn,

Hummmm not sure which is true. I read the article and think I even commented..it wouldn't surprise me if it were true but also think there would be some event like a lawsuit which would pull them off the market if true!

Good morning,  Lenn. I have not heard of this either and I keep my eyes focused on the discussion boards concerning the latest recalls or dangers...

These little urban legends go viral and can cause great home to companies that are undeserved.

Good Morning, Lenn. I did read that Snopes Article on the original post, and I was thinking that the post might come down, but I continued to see more re-blogs. I wonder who really knows the Truth.

Plug in or free standing, air fresheners are expensive and do nothing more than a safe and open box of baking soda. And, it's safe enough to brush your teeth with!

Good morning Lenn, I have heard about the hazard for years but then kept wondering why I never heard about lawsuits or news coverage on the subject. Then the products kept staying on the shelves so I knew something had to be up.

Debbie.  Sadly, bad rumors become viral and just take on a life of their own.  Sad.

Joanna.  But, not nearly as pretty.

Jerry.  Same here.  I deleted my reblog of the post when I got e-mail from Allan May.

Gabe.  THAT is the sad part.  I do NOT pay any attention at all to "rating" sites.  Especially real estate agent rating sites.

Joni.  All we can do is not spread rumors.

Michael.  I was wonderful who would issue a recall for this product.  I can't think of who it would be.

Dorie.  We've become conditioned to be suspecious of any rating, good or bad.

Roger.  I just don't want to be on the wrong side.

Jay.  Not getting involved makes sense to me.

Lenn, I've never had Snopes steer me wrong yet.  If they don't know for sure something is false they'll say that too.

Liz and Bill.  Snopes is new to me.  That said, I know how horrible it is to have false rumors or false informaiton spread about you.  It is just horribel because often, if it's anonmous, there's nothing you can do.

I have had false claims spread about me by a couple of ActiveRain members.   It's not a good experience.  Yet, because of the ActiveRain guidelines, there's nothing I can do. One of the vicious persons is no longer a member.  The other still is.

Fortunately, the receipients of the accusation about me know me and alerted me.  I was able to document the facts quickly.
