Paying It Forward

Often times we think in terms of having to do things on a grand scale to make an impact in the world…but really it is the exact opposite.  Sometimes it is small, little things which can make a significant impact in another’s life. Let me tell you of one such event.

Samantha Ford, a young mother of two, approached her car in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot to find a note and $40 under her windshield wiper. The note said, ““I noticed the sticker on the back of your car,” referring  to  a “Half my Heart  is in  Afghanistan” bumper  sticker. “Take your hero out to dinner  when  he comes  home. Thank  you both  for serving…him deployed and you for waiting.” It was signed “United States veteran” and “God Bless.”

Samantha took a picture of the note and the two $20 bills and posted it on a Facebook page entitled, “Our Deployment: 101, an online community for those in the military. Samantha commented, “I just thought I would share with you all what happened to me today. Came out of Dunkin’ Donuts and found this under my windshield wiper. There are no words to describe how I'm feeling right now. Tears in my eyes. I just wish I could thank whoever did this! God bless our troops and all of those who stand behind them.”

Within just a few days, Samantha’s post had well over a million hits.

Her deployed boyfriend, Albert DeSimone, commented that, “it’s people like this that make him proud to be an American Soldier. We are forever grateful and we will DEFINITELY be paying it forward! God bless our troops!”

There are some really terrific people in this world and we should never lose sight of that. My blog yesterday dealt with a monster who had committed some truly horrible acts of violence. These monsters always seem to grab all the headlines. They seem to always take the wind from our sails…but we should fight hard not to let that happen. We need to constantly remind ourselves that the good outnumber the bad…that light can outshine darkness…that good can triumph over evil.

I’d like to end with…

“You may be only one person in this world, but to one person at one time, you are the world.” Anonymous

Thomas, I long to hear stories like this as we've many times been the ones to Bless others just like this. We never need to hear the thank you because it's not why we do it. I love hearing when Christians leave 100% tips and such when going out. We don't go out very often to eat but when we do, we tip excessively and let them know how much God loves them. We've been Blessed with much and when our accountant showed us our giving deduction was more this year, all while our income went down for the 5th year in a row... we just smiled and thanked God that He always gives us enough to have enough to share with others in need. I know you've done things too Thomas, because you are just that way also.

Bob,

Thanks for sharing not only your comments, but your time and your money. Sometimes you don't even have to give money...sometimes just not responding to someone in anger is enough. Maybe the rude clerk, or the person who took your parking spot you were waiting for...some times your gift to them can be that you simply walked away. Perhaps giving someone the benefit of the doubt can be enough.

Peace to you,

Tom
