Things you find in vacant houses 2

wasp nest      As a Realtor and investor going through many vacant houses, you find so many interesting things. I am more and more amazed at what I come across in these empty houses. People leave behind all sorts of things.

The item on the left was left behind in a pre-foreclosure house that I purchased last Fall.  It is a giant wasp's nest wrapped in twine.  There are 2 tree branches that it was apparently attached to.  It is suspended from the ceiling by a rope.  This was the teenager's room.  Apparently the seller did not want to take this collector's item with them when they moved up north.

This winded up in the trash.  It just didn't go with the house so I had to toss it out.

The next set of photos are another I took last Fall.  This is actually a very nice home in Winter Park.  I was taking photos prior to listing it.  When I snapped the first photo of the living room, the big white orb appeared in it.  Some people claim these orbs are ghosts or spirits.  I don't know what to believe. But I knew that photo would not work for me because the orb distracted the view of the room.  So about 10 seconds later I snapped the second photo and was happy that it was orb free.  That is, until I brought it back to the office and blew it up big on my laptop.  That is when I noticed that the orb moved into the dining room just to the upper left of the doorway.  What the heck.  Maybe ghosts are real and this one was moving.  Weird.

This next photo is an REO bank owned property also from last Fall.  I managed this house for several months.  Squatters broke in and tried to live in the place.  It was apparently some sort of Craigslist scam and the occupants also got duped.  Fortunately I caught them right as they were moving in.  So the police kindly gave them a trespassing violation and they left quietly.  But not before leaving a mess to clean up.  You have to grin and bear it sometimes.

Welcome to the wonderful world of real estate.  I have some more of this series coming soon.  Lots of interesting things that you do find in these empty houses.  Enjoy until next time.

I like your orbs! I can't explain them but they seem to exist....

Thank you for sharing the story, Rob. I heard quite a few interesting stories on things people found inside of vacant homes. I have not personally experienced something that was interesting enough to share.

This is definitely a somewhat comedic and unique post from what I have read so far on ActiveRain. I must admit I am craving more of it though. Please keep us updated on future odd finds.

Do you ever find historic/rare artifacts or anything of value?

So often when I see properties that have been foreclosed, it can break you heart, seeing some of the toys, cloths, photos and everything else imaginable.

Interesting about the orbs; they do make you wonder if ghosts truly exist. Our photos from Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, were full of them and came from no flash photography.

"Cold hearted orb which rules the night (and apparently the day),

Removes the colors from our sight..."

Or something like that.  You should forward those photos to the Moody Blues!

@ Shelly.  Lots of orbs out there.  My cousin is a photographer and she thinks they have something to do with dust particles and the camera flash.  Pretty weird though.

@ Wika.  You need to visit more of them.  Especially ones that are fresh off the foreclosure sale or where it was just abandonned.

@ Yoni.  I have some real doozies that I will post eventually.  Occasionally you find something good but that is typically rare.  I did get a nice computer desk that my kids still use.  And more old-style large TV sets than I could care to imagine.

@ Joe.  It stinks when you come across loads of family albums.  Especially so when it was a probate deal and the kids obviously did not care to take those precious photos with them.

@ Marie.  I have taken photos several times at houses where people swore to me they were haunted.  I did not see a difference between the haunted vs non-haunted and the orbs.

@ Jay.  Funny.  Lots of orbs out there.

Fortunately we haven't had much problem with Craiglist's and/or squatters. I only remember one episode about 3 years ago where the potential tenant called us at the last second. The Craiglist person told them not to call the listing agency, because he didn't want us to know he was giving up on selling the home. Of course, he really didn't want them to find out he didn't own the home.

Freddie Mac now makes us put a sign in the window that also states THIS HOUSE IS NOT FOR RENT.

@ Charles.  Fortunately I caught these people about an hour after they moved in.  They had some sleeping bags and groceries there but that was all.  The police sided with me since it was obvious they just arrived.

@ Than.  Be thankful.  Our office has had 4 incidents in the last year.  People break in, change the locks, and then rent the house out to someone.  In the case above, the perpetrator stole all my signs including the yard signs and the interior signs and my lockbox.
