Tight on dining space? Create a banquette.

Tight on dining space? Create a banquette.

Banquettes are making a HUGE comeback and rightly so. Its like a restaurant booth in your home. Buyers love them.

 RG Into The Studio blog

Banquettes solve several space dilemmas and can accent some of your kitchens best features.

A bay window, picture window, or just about any window in the kitchen is a perfect spot to create a window seat underneath. Add a piano hinge on the lid and you’ve created additional storage. If your floor air vent is an issue create airflow with an openwork grid panel.

That's a mirror behind the cute striped bench. You can achieve a similar look.

Here's Cost Plus World Market's version.

Oyster Harper Banquette

If the upholstered look scares you with kids, try a wood bench and washable seat cushion for easy clean up.

Buyers love homes that help them envision a "lifestyle". Create a fun one in your dining space with a new spin on banquette seating.

Love that top picture. A little blue instead of red and I am a happy buyer. I really enjoy your posts!

Good morning Kim,

Well I'm suggesting your post..what a great fresh look and idea! We actually had one of these 30 years ago in a house we had..the window overlooked the small but lushly landscaped backyard!! You looked out at an  old branching oak tree with a bench underneath........ it that just beckoned you to come out and sit down!!

Banquettes cna make such great use of space - great for older homes as well as some of the strangely-shaped eat-in areas found in some brand-new homes!

Thanks, Brenda. It seems to be a big phenonenom with retailers this spring.

Hi Gary, blue would be a perfect color choice. Did you know that the majority of the population's favorite color is blue? Thanks for reading my blog:)

Thank you so much for suggesting, Dorie. I would love to see a photo of that lush yard and big oak tree! What an ideal setting. I'm sure that house sold fast.

Hi Julia, I love older homes with all that great character. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot in our area, but I like to think there are creative ways to add it. Thanks for stopping by.

I'm on my way to the airport this morning and will be sure to check back later. Have a great hump day everyone!

Our neighbor used the first photo idea in their breakfast nook.  It works well for them and looks good too.

LOVE The idea of a banquette in the kitchen-it saves space and gives you a place to relax and read in front of a window, making the kitchen a lot like a family room as well.  Thanks for the inspiration Kim.

This is a great idea. My friend did just this in her new townhouse to make the most out of the dining area.

Kim,

This is a great idea.  I had never heard of the term banquette.  I completely missed the mirror trick until someone mentioned it in the comment.

That's cool, John. They made a good investment.

Hi Joanna. It does seem like a spot you'd linger a little longer, doesn't it?

I agree Sharon. I'm working with a redesign client currently that has plans to build one - I'll have to post pics.

Smart cookie that friend of yours, Janice!

Hi Sondra, its not something a lot of people hear anymore, but you will...  Yes, the mirror is genius isn't it?
